Here's how to update your printer with custom filaments

I have been tearing my hair trying to find out how to get my custom filaments into my printer (H2D).
Today I found out how to.
Here it is.

First create your custom filament in Bambu Studio.

Then, in order to get them into the printer, go the filament menu (on the printer), select Edit on one of the filament positions, in the popup menu on the far right of the Filament selection row, there’s a circular arrow. Hit this arrow and it will “Update User Filaments”. It’s another popup window that flashes by so fast you won’t be able to read it, but it says it is updating the user filaments, and after that, your custom filaments will appear in the list of filaments in the printer, with proper Manufacturer name and everything, as long as you entered it correctly in Bambu Studio.

I assume you need to either have sync’ed or are currently connected with BambuStudio to the printer when updating, and the updating needs to be made from the printer. At least I haven’t found any way to do it from Studio.

Why the printer doesn’t update the custom/user filaments when syncing or when the custom filaments are added in Studio is a bit of a mystery, seems like an obvious thing to me.

Wait, you’re using the physical machine in front of you to input filament type / temperature / PA configurations, that you then pull from studio in a sync? I dont have any H2 series so im not sure of their workflow, but this seems kinda backwards. I let all my machines think they have Generic in them, and use the slicer to assign real filament profiles to the print job…

No, that’s not what I meant.

First you enter your custom filament in Bambu Studio, with maker, name, type and the specs.
Then, after that. You go to the printer and hit the “User Filament Update arrow” in the Edit Filament popup-window. After that your custom filament will show up in the list of filaments in the printer.

This way you don’t have to use Generic, and can select the proper filament name and type everytime you install it on the printer, whatever filament it is.

Right but if you let the machine just think it has a 1.75mm tube of unknown in it, you dont have to EVER sync/interact with the machine/etc. I guess its just preference unless something is very different in the H2

yeah, I’ve just saved my profile as whatever I want and make sure I choose the filament I customized when loading. IE PC-ABS = Bambu PC and the like. Couldn’t care at all what the AMS things is it. AS long as the profile is right when slicing it could call it carrot cake for all I care.

Yep, my hair has been completely torn out. I have a custom Poly filament that I’m trying to fine tune and adjusting K. And I feel like my adjustments to K are being ignored by the printer because I can not select the Poly filament. Yeah I can select it in the Prepare tab with in Studio but when I actually load the filament and try to tell the printer what I loaded (on a P2S without AMS) I can’t select my custom filament, so I’m stuck with Generic PLA. On the Device tab within Studio, I can select the filament but when I Confirm the choice I get a message that “You need to select the material type and color first”. So long story, but when I hit the circular arrow on the printer, it flashes a quick message “Updating your filament . . .” but my custom Poly never shows up and I’m sure that my K is not being applied as I’m apply some pretty wild variations. When I started reading Magixians’ I thought I found the answer , but to no avail.

Studio had an issue with the profile I downloaded from Polymaker. It was good enough to slice with but was missing something that prevented Studio and the P2S from treating it like a legit filament. I created a new filament within Studio and used the settings from the Polymaker profile and now everything seems happy. Even the tuned K value is working and I can select the filament on the printer screen. I guess a word of caution that if you tune K you need to make sure that the correct filament is loaded and reflected in the filament option under the Device tab and that the modified K value is displayed.

That’s an error I made for weeks because on other slicers you can just save it straight there, and everything is up to the slicer. Not on BB studio and device. Well since the settings have to be in the device, the procedure seems more legitimately needed..

It is crucial that the printer knows what filament is in the printer and what is being loaded. I often change between PLA and PPS-CF for instance. PLA loads at just above 200c and PPS-CF above 300C. if the printer doesn’t know there’s a 300C filament being unloaded it won’t heat the nozzle enough to get it out, and when loading for instance PLA and needs to purge the PPS, it won’t heat the nozzle enough to soften the PPS so it can be purged, and you’ll have a blocked nozzle and have to do the purging (unclogging) manually.

could anyone post a picture of the screen on te printer that has the user filament update arrow?

Since everyone’s acknolwedging how tim4 consuming this is to try to find the right setting and everything…
