How about stopping the whole points system?

Lol, oh no… I get my monthly money out of social security, but it’s my goal to stop that as soon as possible. I don’t like living that way.

3D Printing is only a part of my dailt routine. I also work with CNC machines, laser cutters, Vinyl cutters and electronics. When having good days, I can easily earn my money with my skills, and if 3D printing would become one of htose skills, that would be very welcome.

You’re soon going to have some help with that.

Can we pause the points discussion for a second to talk about this. Do you guys realize that Josh, our Josh that we interact with here frequently… please make sure you’re either sitting down or stand near your fainting couch… HE WORKED ON FALLOUT 3!!! BOARDERLANDS 3!!! MASS EFFECT 2 and 3!!! Did you guys know this?? How did I not know this???

Lol, If you would have followed this topic from the start, you would have known.
I linked to that topic in the starting post

Reading this made me realize that while I may improve as a designer, maybe even one day learn blender, I’ll never be able to post such nice and balanced response as @Josh-3D there’s just no way…

Anyway, to sum up: no, don’t stop the point system. It’s good. It’s not perfect, could be better. A lot of what op refers to as “toxic” on forum regarding points is actually people pointing out bad behaviour and deceptive practices that are used to clearly gamify the point system and cause issues for those honestly earning points. Just see the situation op has: couple friends most likely solely boosted him. In the friend circle that might be ok, but looking from position of company bot whose job is to detect bad behaviour it probably lights up a lot of warning signs. This is called “false positive”. Appeal, talk to a human, maybe get unbanned, cease actions that from outside look “shady” and it’ll be fine.

Also…

OH you sweet summer child… A LOT of “points cheaters” that are mentioned in multiple cheating topics are also present on those platfroms trying to scam people there too, direct to their patreon, sell some “real models” and so on.

I mised it. I was responding to that post where another user thought you changed your mind so easily. I was saying to that user that you didn’t change your mind. You didn’t want the points system to go away in the first place. You want the points and the gift cards, that’s the whole point of your post even though the title says otherwise. It’s ok, and I hope your appeal gets resolved if nothing wrong was done on your part.

Hey babe, the latest rage inducing forum topic just dropped

You’re gonna embarrass me!

One of the things I love about 3d printing, is I get to stand firmly on my own work. I’ve done some brilliant things over the years, but often times I don’t really get to talk about it a lot. These days especially, publishers are so hell bent on controlling the image, that I don’t even have much room to take pride in my work. I can’t just show off the work I did, or talk about the projects I’ve been on; not without prior approval from the publishers. Sometimes all I can do is point to my name in the credits.

I think it takes away a lot from the artist that work on these games. A lot of our hard work gets washed away while some Studio head gets to take credit for the game; as if they had anything to do with it besides signing the paychecks of the people that actually worked on it.

When I work on 3d printing stuff, when I hang out on these forums, it takes me back to the joy I had when I first started; before I ever had a job or even went to school. I use to make addons for the game Trainz. It’s been one of my dream projects these days, to dip back into those old loves like that. Here’s a couple random shots of things I made. These are like 20+ year old models too, so forgive the datedness of it all.

I appreciate that a lot  At least 70% of the time I’m a rambling old man these days.

To the topic on hand. One thing to consider too with Makerworld and the forums here, is most people initially come here because they have one issue or another they’re trying to resolve (especially in the Makerworld sub forum). We’re a community still trying to find itself. Forums are kind of a yester-year type of thing, and so the big communities tend to be on like discord or reddit. Here on the forums, it’s been a little slow going, but as time goes on we’ve been getting more involved in more community stuff, as opposed to it just being a grievance/support forum.

That’s why more and more topics pop up to cover general things, or more happy topics, or just talking shop a bit. More and more people are here wanting that. We’re making friends, we’re helping each other, sharing tips, and just being silly all throughout.

There’s been a couple of awesome community huddles. Talking about photography. The assembly instructions. We had our thread talking about… Threads! Haha. And I’ve still got to dip back and apply the things talked about in there (I haven’t forgotten!).

This community is like Transformers. Sometimes there’s just more than meets the eye.

Okay, now you have me angry . Makerworld should NEVER get rid of the points system! Without we would plunge into regret and sadness (maybe I am exaggerating). Makerworld would become a ghost town.

Just like Thingiverse? Wait…

In my opinion MakerWorld would survive if they took away points or severely cut them back. I wouldn’t say it would thrive but Markerworld would still have a captive audience. Look at Printables as an example. They have moved to a pretty low reward structure but the site is still growing.

But we want Makerworld to be better than Printables.

Thingiverse has models, true. But they’re not the same level of quality that you could expect from MakerWorld, as there’s no incentive to make good models (Other than “Number go up.”) Whereas on MakerWorld there is a clear incentive to post high quality models and promote them, thus earning some minor amount to offset the costs of designing the model and then provide a little bit of a bonus for the designer for their time.

I agree. And also agree over thingiverse. It only serves a purpose these days, that is to people to go there and dig through the models so they can upload them in makerworld as if they have created them. Sadly

If there is a sense of community, there will be always people there :ok_hand:

Several of my old models on thingiverse don’t even have pictured of the printed models, just renders.

Thingiverse was the platform to go when people needed replacement parts, knobs, plugs, etc… It used to be the community to be… until it wasn’t anymore. It was not all about spitting numbers and models in quantity, it was much more.

I’m a little late to the party, but I want to talk about this important part of the points equation from the other end of the spectrum. For those that don’t have 20 years of design experience this same mechanism can encourage them to get started. Maybe they don’t feel like their work is good enough to warrant monetizing in those ways. But the points system does reward them enough to put in the effort to learn. And not just learn design but everything that goes along with it too.

Maybe some of them will grow their skills enough and turn it into a job, but there is a big gap between actually making nothing and making an income and points helps fill that gap. It is motivation for those that aren’t about to walk away from 20 year careers and those just starting out that aren’t ready to make it their career.

Yeah nah, not the best solution. There are so many layers to this issue and for the most part the blame needs to be slammed on MW’s desk as they lack the tenacity to write a clear set of rules/guidelines that can’t be misinterpreted and then follow through with timely and consistent moderation.

We can see results of their ineptness in the latest Community thing, great concept but poor execution as usual. I’m sure they skip a few meetings from the idea stage and just send it to press every damn time. It’s literally a pigs breakfast and its not a day old.

This is the “ready, fire, aim” culture that is often adopted by startups. It promotes a bias for action which many believe is important for success. So even though it can be frustrating, keep in mind that there can be method in this seemingly “madness”

My Wife and I have recently been in the background of a new company and it’s far from half baked carp we see here. I hope the tides start to swing back to good service released to the public instead of damage control and backpedaling we see so much of now.

Quoting the title of the post: Why do those who don’t want the points leave them there and not touch other users for whom the points make something in the modeling?

Does the system seem unfair to you? Are there other alternative platforms
