Bla bla bla characters…
It would cease to be within a few days, the only reason it’s frequented is because of the financial incentive - Look at other examples:
Thingiverse: Got left behind because it didn’t adapt quick enough to offer incentives
Thangs: Use skyrocketed when they stopped making it a top 3 per week only win system. I had to churn out things solidly for 7 days to stay in first to win $70 in vouchers once, now it rewards new creators, weekly monthly, daily with massive rewards… and now it is really busy with top creators using it
Makerworld would stop having big creators if they stopped the points. If the creators leave…
I just do not get it. Printables has lots of models also rewards but not so many people complaining…
I wonder if this is because people who are really only “in it” for the money/compensation gravitate to the platform with the best rewards? This leaves the general population on Printables who find the rewards a perk but not something to get all bent out of shape about.
Out of retirement to say this.
Points drive traffic. Nothing more. The more traffic the more visability. The more visability the more printers and filament sold. The more filament and printers sold the more models uploaded. The more models uploaded the more traffic.
Doing away with points would be akin to shooting themselves in the foot. It’s the same reason they are so slow to react (if at all) when AI generated images flood the site. They look pretty, they generate traffic…see above.
MW, BL do not give but a little bit of a piddle if the model is good. Good is great for driving traffic and they have their “featured” category for that.
Exclusive means “Pretty”. Pretty means traffic…see above.
Everyone who feels anything about anything on MW can pretty much shove it. It won’t matter until it affects traffic.
Read that again. It. Won’t. Matter. Until. It. Affects. Traffic.
Good designers will keep doing what they do. Josh gave his reasons and he’s not alone. Points grabbers and greedy will keep doing what they do. Just hope they don’t drown out the Josh’s of the site.
TLDR. Nothing matters until traffic is affected, so you’re just releasing steam by posting about it. Doesn’t matter.
well i’d say it’s because printables puts a lot of control points in the rewards, including caps, which in all honestly makes it less attracting, but not a deal breaker
the way that a model can only gain 400 points max per each 30 days is an interesting control point, although for a designer not really great, as we all know there are some models that get a lot of initial traction and then it starts fading away as time goes by, which means that you might top the points in one week (or even a couple of days) and then no more points for a full month
even though this isn’t great, i think it does make people that are in it only for the points to not have as much interest, and it doesn’t generate as much noise, as these kind of caps end up regulating the community
but again, i much prefer the makerworld approach in terms of rewards i think it’s a better way to recognise the designers that put in the work to make it the most active repository these days, if makerworld puts caps (more than before, because i remember when models generated much more points than now :D) i think it will loose a bit of it’s appeal, as printables still holds a lot more activity, there are models that do very well there that get very poor traction here… so it does bring more exposure, despite the lower rewards
As frustrating as it may be, we probably can expect MW to take the MVP (minimum viable product) approach when it comes to launching new features.
While the MVP approach is not suitable for releasing a new printer (for example, the X1C is anything but an MVP), it’s good for new MW features. They don’t want to sink in too many man-hours and too much money going far down the road based on assumptions that can be wrong. MVP is great for testing ideas, validating assumptions and getting customer feedbacks. I think it makes sense that the Exclusive Models Program and the Community feature started with MVP and evolve based on user feedbacks. How would you do it differently?
Satisfaction

I know, great video, great art direction - satisfaction.
Very selective editing, at least it will not be pulled off.
From my point of view the points its the only reason for upload designs on the platform. If they stop the point system i will stop to upload, it wouldnt be worthy anymore for me to design things, print them and upload them…
I have about 8000 prusameters on printables, for a while I could only use one voucher per order (this has changed) and even then, I think the free filament rewards cost me more in postage than a full price single reel of the most expensive filament I can find locally
I’ll wait til I have 10000 and get the free prusa mini of something and give it away/sell it
Purely because MW offered me rewards in my country (Australia) for a site where I can order and get it shipped in two days, and I could save them up and get a printer etc
I haven’t bought filament in ages, It’s all been points
But I know damn well I’m sending customers their way so i don’t feel bad
where do you see this has changed? the information on rewards page still says only one voucher per order…
i’m also saving up the points in printables, eventually i’ll be able to get the MK4S it will take a long time, but it will get there eventually i hope
I thought someone on reddit mentioned it, if I’m wrong that’s annoying and I’ll just wait for a mini
Wish I could give ya my points
After I had my points put in the minus whist Hughforge users are rolling in coins, I have given up uploading to makerworld, I’ll browse to see what there is on there, but I no longer want to be apart of that side of 3D Printing.
I love Benny Benassi.
That’s what I see too. I hope its changed though. I have no use for their printers/filament, but I’d order a pile of those hats if I could stack vouchers.
You are killing it! It took me like two years to get enough for one roll of filament. I remember how excited I was, then I figured out I had to pay $17 shipping for my free roll because it was coming from the Czech Republic
I got like 4 free rolls. One of which has mysteriously disappeared (unless I’m just dumb) after I removed all of my models to post exclusively on MW. Only redeemed two rolls as I don’t care to pay shipping. It was a complete waste of my time to ever go on that website.
