How to change from AMS to Ext Spool Mid Print

Hello All,
I am having an issue with a filament in slot #4 of the AMS, the motor is getting overloaded for some reason I don’t know then when I press Retry, the printer rewinds and does its things and goes back to work for sometime until it gets stuck again. I am not making steady progress this way so I want to move the filament to the Ext Spool in the middle of the print but I am not able to.

I took the spool out but the printer is asking me for a refill. I am not sure how to do this.

Can anyone please shed some light into how I can change from AMS filament to Ext. Spool. I already installed the external spool so you can skip that part, I need to know which settings I need to enter into the printer to make it go for it.

Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!

When the AMS motor overloads, it is always because my AMS tries to turn the spool for too long. The last time it happened was during unwinding. The reason was that I was using a cardboard spool. This got a little jammed during printing and apparently slipped through often.

If you seem to have the same problem, stick insulating tape on the edges of the spool. This will improve the situation and the fault should disappear.

Thanks for your input but my issue is different and I already tried many things. What I really need is to know how we go from AMS to Ext Spool in the middle of a print. The spool is already installed externally I just need to know how to change the printer instructions to resume. Thank you!

If you want to use the external spool, you must deactivate the AMS. As far as I know, this is not possible in the middle of the print. You must specify this before printing. This means that you have to feed all filaments from external.

You don’t. But, you could pause, remove that roll and AMS should go to the next similarly filled location. Should is operative word. But you can’t make it go external. If you removed all rolls from AMS it will just not restart

I would also like to know how to achieve this. My scenario involves multi-type filament printing. I am printing in PLA, but the last few layers are printed in flexible PLA, which I cannot feed through the AMS. I have figured out how to pause the print and retract the initial layers of PLA, disconnect the AMS, manually load the flexible PLA, and successfully extrude it. However, when I resumed the print, only a single line of flexible PLA printed before the AMS dumped most of my spool of PLA (since it was last loaded with no outlet).

I am going to look into the G-code settings, but it would be helpful to have an option for making these layer changes more seamlessly.

Just had that issue tonight. Using inland filament and printing a AMS riser. First two parts I used inland ptfe+ on the manual spool, the third part I put a new roll of the same filament in the AMS as the front two pieces are multi color prints. Kept binding up. Turns out this new cardboard spool weirdly sized, but the filament is bound up. I switched back to the old roll to run it out, then I’ll have to respool the new roll. Going to try the inland cardboard adapters but I suspect any cardboard rolls will be on the external spool only

Hey, did you ever figure this out using G-code? I too want to print with 2 different materials, 1 which is not AMS compatible. I want to make some dragons with glow in the dark spikes, but glow in the dark PLA is not supposed to go into the AMS. Let me know…thanks!

Hi! So I had the same problem and I realize this post was a while ago but thought I might be able to help if you or anyone else still hasn’t fixed the issue.

This was fixed/added in an update after you made this post and now it’s as simple as pausing the print whenever you want to switch between the AMS and external spool, disconnect the AMS PTFE tube and the 4-pin electrical connection (unplug it from the AMS, not the printer), then loading the external spool as you normally would.

I think this is a really useful update and wrote it here in case anyone was unaware of it.

i want to print TPU from external spool and change to AMS lite to print PLA/PETG later. didnt find a solution yet. tried TPU from AMS lite (A1) but it doesnt work reliably.
would appreciate any feedback! currently trying with pause at layer and want to change filament manually. but have no prime tower and also wrong print setting after TPU.
