Can someone point me to a tutorial on how to make a model customizable on Makerworld please?
That is such a massive question without an easy answer.
First, what does customisable mean to you?
What comes to mind is the term “parametric”, this is a term that describes the principle of designing a model in such a way that users are able to change one or more parameters to make the model adjust in size or style based on the values provided.
Fusion 360 has this in the form of “parameters”, OpenSCAD is entirely designed around the principle of being parametric.
Other CAD software have their own way of achieving it.
This is not a MakerWorld feature, it is a 3D design methodology p.
MakerWorld does allow users the ability to provide responses to parameterised 3D models if those models were built using OpenSCAD with the parameters exposed in the way required.
The designer uploads the OpenSCAD file instead of or in addition to related non-parametric models.
Thank you for the explanation.
I just want to make some dimensions adjustable so yes parametric is probably what I need initially.
So I need to learn to use Fusion/OpenSCAD first.
I guess Tinkercad is not upto this then lol (no answer needed for that).
I may be back in about 6 months
It is a respected tool used by newbies and professionals, there is a big 3D YouTube guy that exclusively uses it.
The difference is having something that can also utilise the parametric abilities.
Fusion 360 is for those that visually edit.
OpenSCAD is for those who prefer to build models using programming languages, with the model only being shown in a preview window.
Cheers, I have done some modelling in the past but at 60 I now find learning new tools harder to stick in my head, hence only using TK.
I have time to take the long route and will start on Fusion this xmas, then OpenSCAD after that.
Cheers.
60 is the new 40s my friend
Learning new skills is always the best way to keep the guliver sharp. BTW you may want to check Onshape
I probably do but that will have to wait until 2026
I’m 13 years old and I live in Turkey (where nobody even Bambu Lab supports new things like printers) and I can do it. I trust you man you can do it too
Lad!
Your 13, you have a young brain and enthusiasm that allows you to learn and retain things far far easier than I do.
Your in the prime of your life and I wish you well in your learning all things CAD/3D etc.
Me, I walk into a room and have to walk back to where I came from to see if something can jog my memory why I went into that room in the first place. By the time I get into my attic mancave in the late evenings all I’m good for is watching youtube and other assorted videos lol.
Every time I try to set aside a little time to try and watch a youtube video about how to use Fusion, I get sidetracked by something or other - maybe something important, maybe puppy videos
However, thank you for the vote of confidence
My 40s must have been rough…
What website do I use for making a 3D Design?
For the first steps into 3D-Design for 3D printing I recommend TinkerCAD.com - it’s not the most versatile, but very beginner-friendly.
If you are a programmer, try OpenSCAD.
If you are more into organic models (like figurines), try first steps in SculptGL, it’s a bit like working with virtual clay.
You’ll find tutorial videos on YouTube for all those.
A very relevant and useful Q and very helpful answers. Well done and thanks.
I’ve only started with an A1 a week ago, so far so good but I’m retired IT s/w dev and was also looking at how best to start creating my own models (have a lot in the queue). I’ll give Tinkercad a go and start getting some things out.
