How to print from external spool but AMS attached?

Hi, I have a X1 Carbon with AMS attached.
In the past I just printed with AMS without any problems.
Now I wanted to print using an external spool with BambuLab TPU 95A HF.
But I don’t know how!?!

In the ‘Prepare’-section I just see the AMS settings:

If I print I get this screen:

I already disabled AMS but the dropdown box to change filament is inactive.
So how please do I print with an external spool?
Why it is so complicated in BambuStudio?

Thanks for any help!

In Studio, device tab, you will have to set that filament in the external spool. You can also do this before loading the filament in the printer.

Once the filament is set in the device tab then resync in Studio and the option will be available to use the external spool.

@johnfcooley: Thanks for reply, I could get some steps ahead but still cannot choose the external spool for printing

As you said I set a material in the ‘Device’ tab:

Then I resynced the materials in the ‘Prepare’ tab.
The TPU material appeared as 4th filament in the filament section:

Print_TPU_5

If I want to print I still cannot select the external spool (the tropdown with PLA inside is disabled) even if I disable AMS:

I cannot believe printing from external spool is that complicated!

Please help me further…

Good morning. Haven’t had my coffee yet so forgive mispellings and grammar.

Even though the filament is shown as “4” it is still external. The external spool will always be the last number regardless of how many you have in the AMS.

Just slice and send to the printer being sure to uncheck AMS as well as (well I do for good measure) click on the filament above that.

I’m sure you know that the filament needs to be loaded. From there send it. The print will begin.

Hope this helps. Screen shots are sloppy cause coffee.

@johnfcooley: Forgive me but I cannot make it work

After slicing I hit ‘Print plate’ and get this screen:

Then I disable AMS and get this screen:

As you can see the filament is PLA and not TPU. I cannot change it since the dropdown box is disabled.

It seems in your 2nd screenshot you chose the TPU filament somehow - but the screenshot is cut on the left side.
Do I have to choose the filament under the prepare tab? If yes where do I have to choose it?

Short version
At that screen, just press Send and it will work.

Longer version (with explanation)

Uncheck the Enable AMS option, then ignore the Filament selection.

For reasons I cannot comprehend, this is the correct process.

When you choose Send it will automatically print to the external spool and you are responsible for making sure it matches the one you chose in the slicer.

The matching options underneath each Filament are ONLY used for the AMS choices.

This has confused and caught me out more than once and I often use the external spool for TPU printing.

The Oracle has spoken!

I thought I had said the same thing, but I’m not an oracle.

I had a similar experience. If this thread had existed 6 weeks ago it would probably have provided me with the solution, thanks @MalcTheOracle
I got so frustrated I ended up disconnecting the AMS data/power cable. That fixed it!

@MalcTheOracle: Thanks,

I doubt that this works if I just hit ‘Send’ since the material, as you can see on my screenshot is set to ‘PLA’ and this is used for printing I guess. On the homescreen of the printers display I see a white print object, but in the ‘Device’ section of Bambu Studio I gave the TPU a yellowish tint.
Anyway I did it, I pressed ‘Send’ and the printer moves very fast across the buildplate. I believe that the printer ‘thinks’ it is (still) PLA on the external spool.
As I know for TPU the printspeed is much slower.

I still miss that last piece of the puzzle:

→ Where please do I choose the filament (in the slicer as you said)?

I think it’s done on the 2nd screenshot from @johnfcooley. But this screenshot is cut on the left so I cannot clearly see.

I think I found it :face_with_monocle:, please correct me if I am wrong:

  1. Click the ‘Objects’ button right hand side of the ‘Process’ section in the ‘Prepare’ tab
  2. Click inside the field with the number in it (on my PC I have to click a few times until the dropdown box opens)
  3. From the dropdown list choose the filament you want to use for printing

Oh my good is this complicated.

You never said you hadn’t selected the material like you would have done when using the material.

That is also easy, by pressing the number of the filament when you have selected the object it will be assigned the filament you have in that number slot, you don’t have to deal with that weird drop down.

Either way, pressing send would have got you printing as I said previously.

@MalcTheOracle: Thanks, great tip:

pressing the number of the filament when you have selected the object

In my case on the viewport in the ‘Prepare’ tab I selected the object I wanted to print (from external spool) and then pressed ‘4’ on the keyboard to get my TPU filament selected for that object.
The object gets the yellowish tint and in the ‘Print plate’ dialog the TPU material is selected - great:

BTW, you can also click with right (!!!) mouse button on any object you want to print and then choose the filament:

Thanks to everyone here!
