How to set default printer

Hello, I have just recently purchased a P1S and AMS unit and they’re great. However, when I am using Bambu Studio I always have to remember to change the printer to a P1S as every time BS opens it changes it back to an X1C. I have had a couple times when I have forgotten to check and hit print. The prints finish but the quality is definitely not good when the wrong printer is selected.

Is there a way to change which printer is automatically selected when the program opens? I haven’t been able to find it. Thanks for any help.

ps. Under printer selection only the P1S is selected.

As far as I know it uses what was set last time you closed the program. But it’s often messed up by Makerworld models, even if merely looking at them.

Thanks, that must be the issue. I will just have to get better at checking I guess. Thanks for the help.

For what it’s worth it really annoys me that loading a project (be it from Makerworld or somewhere else) can select a printer for me that I haven’t listed among what I have. I have only the four nozzle sizes of X1C enabled. If loading a project and the printer used in that project doesn’t match, it should obviously leave the printer profile as I had it and only load anything else!

The whole reason to use a project file (.3mf) is to preserve ALL the settings, which necessarily includes the printer. It is always up to the user to decide if the settings are appropriate and to change those that are not.

You are right of course. Trying to “transparently” change the printer without changing any other setting would probably just open a nasty can of worms.

That’s why I just download the .stl/.step file. If I have to check all the settings anyway…

This is what I should actually get into a habit of doing then as opposed the the project file. Thanks for the help.

Yes, it should at least offer the option to ‘switch to project settings’ or not. Oh well, work in progress.

Hello- im new to 3d printing and bambu. under “process” it keeps saying a1 even tho i have selected p1s under printer selection. im not asking to set it as default just how to change it back in general. thanks!

The Prepare and Preview tabs show the same printer selection option.

If you change one the other matches it. This is where you set up the print profile.

The Device tab shows a different choice as it is used for a different purpose.

They can match, but, they do not have to.

  • If you are setting up what you will print, you normally do this in the Prepare tab.
  • If you wish to control the printer, then you use the device tab.

This helps those with multiple printers. I suspect you have more than one or you wouldn’t be asking.

They are sticky, which means they keep the value they were last set to.

This is set each time you close a window.

in prepare (and preview), on the left side under “printer” it says “Bambu Lab P1S 0.4 nozzle” (which is correct). but if you go slightly further down under “process” it says “0.20mm Standard @BBL X1C.” which is wrong since i have the p1s (its my only printer). this is what im trying to fix

OK, now I know what you are referring to.

What you are seeing is the correct information.

Immediately under the Process section displays your currently chosen (or auto-chosen) presets for your layer height. You can change the layer height here to set it for the project as a whole.

The presets that appear are correct for the type of printer you have, or more correctly, the family of printers you have.

I also have the P1S and an A1 mini, mine also says “0.20mm Standard @BBL X1C”.

The reason it does this is both simple and annoying.

Simple

The P & X series printers all share identical specifications for the nozzle/layer height settings.

If I swap to the A1 mini it becomes “0.20mm Standard @BBL A1m” and to the A1 (not mini) it becomes “0.20mm Standard @BBL A1”.

This is because the way the layer height information differs is currently broken into these groups:

  1. P & X series
  2. A1 mini
  3. A1

Each group has slight variations requiring different internal values.

Annoying

Because the P & X series printers are considered the same for these settings, they give them one name as they only need to maintain one set of these files.

They could have named them anything. I assume they left them as the first printer they sold.

Conclusion

You do not have to correct anything as nothing is wrong, it is simply confusing because of a design choice they made.

Thanks so much! this really helped a lot

maybe try redownloading BS.

In Bambu Studio Go to PREPARE
Just below that name it shows what printer is selected
Click on the square box with line and a list shows
Select the correct printer (if wifi connected…)

Sorry If you click the box a New window will appear
with the selected printer
Click on that line and a list appears, select right one

Don’t mean to hijack the topic, but you’re saying the those tabs will open back to the last printer they were set too? Is there a setting to get it to do that? I have to manually select the only printer I have each time I click the device tab. Not just when I first open Bambu Studio but every time I switch to another tab and I have to select my only printer in the device tab again. Very annoying. I hope there is way to set it to always load my only printer. Thanks

As this isn’t typical sounding behaviour, can you provide some screenshots showing the process you are experiencing?

Essentially, a quick step by step.

Hopefully this works for you. I found while taking screen shots it doesn’t always loose the printer when switching to just one tab then back. When switching to two or more tabs then back it looses the printer most of the time but not always. It never has the printer loaded after opening Bambu Studio.

  1. Top left. Program opened no printer.
  2. Top Right. Selecting printer.
  3. Mid Left. Printer loads.
  4. Mid Right. Select another tab.
  5. Bottom Left. Select a second tab.
  6. Bottom Right. Printer is no longer set in the Device tab.
