Running a P1S and doing a lot of ABS. I have coated both the outside of the machine and the interior of the chamber with that foil-coated bubble wrap insulation stuff to maintain temps. It’s definitely helped.
I am now looking at installing an external dryer hose to vent the fumes out of a nearby window. I’ll print & attach a duct to the rear ventilation grate and use a dryer-window-vent-kit. The window is directly above the machine, so maybe 2 feet of distance. I figure I can then remove the small internal Carbon Filter, which should increase air flow.
What impact should I expect to see on chamber temps, if I’m venting the warm VOC laden air out? The printer’s not fully sealed, but the foil insulation does make it considerably less porous. I have a chamber heater kit on the way, so I will be able to run that to compensate, but how hard will it have to work?
I thought about an internal Bento Box style filter, but I think venting externally is better long term, and I’d struggle to find room for both Bento and heater inside.
Very hard, it may not be possible. I pump hot air in from a cheap bonnet hair dryer.
So it’s better not to vent the chamber at all and try to fit an internal bento box-style filter? Or to use those HEPA + Carbon filter’s that fit into the stock filter space?

That HEPA is not a recirculating filter, if you are going to use that just use a vent.
Yes the bento boxes work well if you are trying to keep in the heat.
The hair dryer works well also but it’s fiddly, you need to suck air out just slightly faster than you are putting it in.
Thanks yes, I’m aware the HEPA is not recirculating. But I can already maintain ABS temps using the stock Carbon filter, so replacing that with the HEPA+Carbon should mean better filtration and similar heat performance?
- Bento would mean internal recirculating filtration so minimal heat loss, but I might need to find room for both Bento Box filter AND heater to go hotter.
- The vent idea removes the stock Carbon filter (with nothing in it’s place to improve air movement), and thus the VOC’s etc are vented out the window, but some heat would go with it.
- The HEPA+Carbon is kind of the middle-ground compromise - no additional modifications required, heat retention similar to what I have now, and filtration better than stock but not as good as external venting
From a warmth perspective, the Bento keeps the chamber hottest (assuming I can fit both heater and filter in).
From a filtration perspective, external vent gets rid of the most fumes.
From a convenience perspective, HEPA+Carbon helps a bit with both warmth and filtration (esp with an added heater)
