I’ve purchased the larger backlight from Bambu, which has 4 LED plates. I’ve also downloaded the (only) frame from the Bambu wiki, which I thought would fit the plates - I want to produce a larger lithophane.
The strips don’t fit the frame at all. Neither as a pair nor a quartet. Further you can’t even put the LED plates IN the frame as it appears designed for (at best) a single board with no sockets on.
Where can I find a frame model? Also, if you (Bambu) are going to offer a backlight that doesn’t fit the frames you reference, perhaps you could indicate this in the product details on the website (and or update your wiki).
When you generate a lithophane in the makerlab it provides a frame of the appropriate size in the 3MF download. There is also a 3D model you can download on the product page in the makerstore.
Don - I’ve had another look at Makerlab. Whilst there is an ‘included’ Frame it does not match the size of the backlight I’ve bought from Bambu. The backlight consists of 4 panels with 11x4 LEDs. Here it is on the UK site - the second option with 4 panels.
I couldn’t see anyway to select different frame sizes in Makerlab.
Ah. Kind of apologies. If you go right to the bottom of the page there are in fact some links to models for suitable frames and some instructions.
Just in case it may become useful:
I did print frames for the original single piece backlight last year but found the fit to be, well, let’s call it a press fit
So after the first one, I scaled them up to have a bit of tolerance.
This is not strictly a Bambu question now, but I’m really struggling to work out how to get a lithophane of the right size for the frame I’ve now printed (which looks great by the way).
The information site seems to indicate a size of 156x207. 156 appears to be just a little larger than the width of the slot for the lithophane in the frame (I can’t accurately measure the height as the slots are internal) . More challenging, if (in MakerLab) I set the width to 207, I cannot set the width to 156. It sets itself to 147 which is smaller than the inside of the frame. I’m in ‘free’ mode
Changing the 'cropping just does odd things that I don’t understand.
Cropping still does odd things. However, the issue is that lithophane maker expects the lithophane to be a specific aspect ratio. That is 1-1.33 or one of the A sizes (I think). A4, A5 and so on. I’ve adjusted the original image and have got something close. now to try printing it.
The one you have is the one with 4 strips and you can find the frame in Makerlab when you create your Litho.
You are the one who downloaded the wrong frame
@Iain_D - Here’s my frame for 108 x 144 lithophanes that uses the FAZ007 LED light board from Bambu (156 x 120mm). Some prefer it over the “official” frame. It links to the correct backlight that fits it.
When starting off in MakeMyLithophane it is important to select the right type for the light source you are using. The 3-size frame uses 2-4 of the light panels with separate USB cord. The Fixed Frame is for the lightboard with the USB built in. The LED Strip allows you to make lithophanes of any size.
If you scroll down, there is also the option to make a lithophane without a frame which also allows any size.
You can change this option once you have started by selecting the back and forth arrow icon.
For the 3 size frame you have the option of 2-4 panels and landscape or portrait orientation. For the fixed frame you only have the option between landscape and portrait orientations.
For the LED and frameless you have the option to select a ratio or free-size and if you scroll down you get the option for setting sizes. You also get the option of selecting which printer so it will limit you to what is printable.
Notice that dimensions of the lithophane will be slightly larger to allow for a 2mm border around the lithophane. For the frameless lithophane you also have an Attribute tab that lets you set the margin size and thickness.
For those printing a color lithophane using the CMYK you have the option under the Image tab to select Color Match. This will affect the order of the color layers. The first layer is always white, but the second layer colors show through so I like to try each, download, and slice to see which second layer I think looks best for displaying the lithophane with the light off.
Thanks for the details. I was in the same boat as Iain, but now understand that the LED plates are for the 3-size frame, which are different than the backlight board with fixed frames. Do you know if there are any light guides for the 2:3 size? I know the fixed frame lithographs include the appropriately sized light guide (diffuser) in the 3mf file, but thats not the case for any of the 3-sized frames.
