There are sites, like go fund me, that allow people to say “i need money for this or that” and people can contribute, sort of crowdfunding charity. I agree that this isnt like kickstarter, where you need the money to make the thing, but its still asking the crowd, random people, to fund someone in exchange for a thing.
I have been working on a game table system with a touch-sensitive LED surface that I proposed to Bambu. I completed a prototype of the game table and am working on a gaming desk with a similar feature. In order for others to make their own, I need to develop several different sizes including modularity for custom sizes, various rail designs, tweaking the current part connection system to make the build as user-friendly as possible, setting up a pipeline to the non-3D print hardware and electronics needs, build instructions and troubleshooting guide, as well as be available post-campaign to support the project and it’s backers. Lots of time sunk in and many more to go. The crowdfunding option is a way to fund the time and effort needed to make it happen. Hopefully I will be moving forward with the project soon either on MW or another crowdfunding platform.
You’re right! Currently it feels like back-payment for finished work. However, I see this as MakerWorld trying to distance itself from being the sole source of designer compensation.
I can understand getting paid for something that you already made, or are very close to finalizing. It’s a good way to fund the other ideas one might have in the future.
Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer finished products, not an idea of a model. You have to have a working prototype at least, in my opinion. Otherwise people can say, “Hey, I can make this thing or the other, pay me to help make it, throw in a nice AI render of it and then never make it.”
What I don’t agree with is have the same model “genre” for 3/4/5 times. There needs to be some diversity.

How do I create a crowdfunding project?
- Provide all project information, such as the title, a description, images, and associated videos. Keep in mind that a strong project begins with an eye-catching, compelling banner, paired with a clear, well-structured video that showcases the entire project.
- Set your funding target, how long the project will run, and the reward levels for supporters. You can also include add-on options for those who want to offer extra. Additionally, ensure that higher-tier rewards include something special or exclusive.
- Review and submit your project for platform approval.
- After MakerWorld approves all your submitted content, click on the ‘Go to activate my pre-launch page’ button to start promoting your project in advance. Share the news with your current network, post about it in active 3D printing forums and communities, and make full use of social media to expand its reach.
- When you feel the excitement has built up and all preparations are complete, you can launch the project whenever you like!

You can write an email with your proposal. Once approved, you would have access within Creator Center to build out a project - those are then submitted for approval before they can be launched.
