Hello,
As title says. Is engineering plate worth it for X2D printer?
I was under impression that it has something special to offer when it comes to engineering filaments ABS/ASA etc. but i compared it with regular textured PEI and they both require glue for prints.
I expected that if it’s engineering plate maybe it does not need such gimmicks.
So yeah, is engineering plate worth it? Does it offer some benefits to print quality other than different texture of first layer?
It has nothing to do with print quality other than successful bed adhesion and longevity at high plate temperatures. If you are not having issues with your prints on the plate you have, this one isn’t for you.
While it certainly can be used with any material, I would not primarily purchase it for PLA, PETG, ABS, or ASA because those print just fine on PEI.
It’s really designed for high temp materials running build plate temperatures which may be detrimental to other plates in the long run. PPS, PPA, maybe nylon, possibly polypropylene and polycarbonate (i haven’t tested it with PP/PC yet though), etc.
The catch is needing to use the correct glues for each of those materials.
Edit: Granted, ABS/ASA certainly do require higher temps, so one could purchase it for that, but I find they both print and release from the bed so well without glue that I don’t bother to use the engineering plate for those and I would probably buy a replacement textured plate rather than mess with glue on the engineering one.
I tried one and my experience was that it provides terrible adhesion for ABS/ASA.
