The new MakerWorld landing page and the 3D Models pages are a bit too busy for me when viewing on a computer screen. I think a bit more blank spaces on the left and right, and maybe also at the bottom, would make it easier on the eye.
On the other hand, the Contests pages can have less empty spaces and have bigger photos shown.
The new layout may have been trying to show more models on each screen. On my computer screen the landing page has 5 models on each row, but then it can only show 2 1/2 rows. So the total models completely visible are 10.
Edited: The 3D Models page shows 3 complete rows so that’s 15 models per screen.
I wouldn’t mind if it shows 4 models per row in 2 rows (not 2 1/2 rows as is now ) for a total of 8 models. The space saved can be used for an increased size of thumbnails and some breathing room (blank space) on the left, right and the bottom. This less number of models shown should be ok if models are better filtered to tailor to each user’s preference.
I don’t know how the new layout looks on the phone.
You’re right. I just realized that I need to turn my head slightly from side to side in order to browse a row of models.(On the 3d model tab, just move eyeballs)
However, this may be beneficial in preventing cervical spine disease.
I fully agree. I played a bit around and found that adding some more visual borders - without destroying the overall intended lightweight look and feel, improved it a lot for me.
That looks better, and still has 15 images per screen. A little more space goes a long way.
If the thumbnails are too small because of the added space, I don’t mind if they make it fewer images per screen. Actually I didn’t have any problem with the previous layout. Maybe they could have increased the size of thumbnail images if they think there was too much white space.
If you make your browser window narrower it reduces the number columns accordingly. If you want bigger icons zoom you browser to 150% then you’ll see less.
Or am I missing something?
It’s not just the number of images per screen, but also the white space or the lack of.
One way to make the current layout more elegant and easier on the eye is to make it 4 images per row. This will show12 images per a full screen, and will have more negative space on the left and the right side of the page. But BL may come up with a better solution.
I think that the number of models does not matter. The models must have a clear distance so they can be better identified. With the current implementation, it´s hard to see where the model title, username, etc. belongs. There is insufficient whitespace to have this kind of layout without borders work.
The current layout can use more white space between the images, but it also needs more space on the left and right side of the page (the page margin). Changing to 4 images per row will leave room for that.
Imagine a letter with words taken over the whole page, up to the edges vs a letter with proper page margin, the latter is not only more elegant but also easier on the eye.
I also think serving 15 images per screen is too big a serving. Too much in one bite. But this is perhaps subject to each person.
I think this example sums up what seems off for me on the new layout. The model title/username isn’t really tied to the picture or different from the background. Where as your alternate seems to make more sense and easy for me to pick up on.
The current layout has one thing that’s a positive: big thumbnail images. I would like the next layout to keep the size of thumbnail up if possible. It is doable.
