Issues with the First Layer

Does anyone know why the first layer adheres but isn’t perfect? I’ve tried all calibration options and used different print beds, but the first layer only comes out perfectly on the original plate provided by Bambu Lab. The smooth plate I bought additionally doesn’t work, and neither do some plates from other manufacturers.

The issue only occurs during actual prints – all calibration parts and the purge tower have a perfect first layer, regardless of the position I try. However, the actual part printed just 1 cm beside it has a really poor first layer.

I’m stuck and hoping someone can help.

More details and pictures would help. Type of filament, is it dry, have you changed any settings?

You mentioned calibration but I assume you mean auto calibration and not manual calibration of dry filament. The problems with the first layer could be over or under extrusion, partial nozzle clog or other things. And in fact due to the complexities of the bottom layer you may just have some very fine over-extrusion due to overlap that is expected, sometimes it looks worse than it is at least imo.

How are you cleaning your plates? The vast majority of adhesion problems all stem from having contaminates on the plate.

With that said, you posted in the P series section so I assume you have a P series printer? Be aware that the print needs to be sliced for the correct plate that you have in the machine. The P series doesn’t check to make sure you have the correct plate installed for the print. Example, if the print is sliced for an Engineering/cool plate and you try printing the same file on a PEI plate you will have adhesion problems.

Printing with an P1S with AMS
The filament I’m using is Extrudr PLA NX2, which has been fully calibrated. The issue is that the underside of multi-color prints doesn’t look good – there are gaps between the lines, and I need a uniform first layer for a nice finish on the top surface. When I calibrate the filament (which happens after an auto-leveling pass), the underside of all printed parts looks great. However, when I print the actual part I need, the underside looks terrible – but only on the printed part itself. The purge tower always has a perfect bottom layer, no matter the plate or position.

I clean the plate with isopropanol, so it’s not an adhesion issue, as the purge tower is printed on the same plate and is always perfect. I also ensure the correct plate is selected in the slicer settings. I even tried printing on the smooth plate while setting it to the textured plate in the slicer, hoping this would improve the first layer fill. Unfortunately, I still encounter the same issue.

That doesn’t clean the bed unless you use a lot of it to completely flush the plate. Wiping it will not removed oils. Dish soap and hot water.

Printing on the smooth plate there will be lines between the extrusions when compared to the textured plate. That’s just how the smooth plate is. There is a setting in Bambu studio were you can increase your flow rate for the first later. This can help reduce the lines.

Can you provide a picture of the bottom of your print?

Which version of Bambu Studio are you using? I don’t have this setting in Advanced.

Cltr+P (or drop down next to file/Preferences)
Check Develop Mode.

And while you are there, do your eyes a favour and check “Enable dark mode” :sunglasses:

Thank you for the help! Bambu Studio can be a bit complicated and cumbersome sometimes XD Luckily, there’s a great community that’s always there to help.
