Jealousy in the Competition – My Experience at MakerWorld

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share something because there have been negative comments under one of my models, some of which I had to have removed. I participated in the fishing contest with my 3D-printed frog. Even though it has been quite popular, some people think it doesn’t belong in the contest because it isn’t a very effective lure. I can’t deny that – my frog is certainly not the best lure, but that wasn’t my intention.

The idea came when I saw my kids playing with the frog in the bath and trying to catch it. I wanted to combine the function of a lure with a toy and create models that have multiple uses. I carefully read the contest rules and designed my entry to meet the requirements. My goal was to promote innovation and new ideas.

Unfortunately, I’ve been accused of ruining the contest with my model. It was reported and removed from the contest for about a day. After reviewing it, MakerWorld decided to reinstate it.

I want to avoid such issues in the future and would love to hear your thoughts. I understand that some people take fishing very seriously and want only the best lures in the contest. For me, 3D printing and CAD work are about more than just functionality – I like to blend and mix to create new, creative designs. I’ve had my P1P for about two months and have been working with Fusion and Blender for six weeks. So, I’m absolutely new to the scene and would appreciate your opinions.

Thank you for your feedback and advice.

as far as I see it, its free game unless or until it’s taken down. So power to ya bud and I did notice it but put 2 n’ 2 together… Lures > Frogs… Yeah that works :upside_down_face:

In my opinion, a contest is about winning, and as long as your entry is valid, there shouldn’t be an issue. If Bambu Lab is okay with your participation, then continue as planned. Report any users who harass you, or simply ignore them.

Some people have a very narrow view and can’t see past their nose. At first glance your entry doesn’t look like a fishing lure, but after looking at the details I can see how it fits the competition. While your model isn’t something I’d ever use, I do use frogs when bass fishing, so it’s not unreasonable. These would probably be actually be quite fun for kids since these double as a toy, especially if it can function as a bobber as you listed.

This seems too common, people going around bullying, trying to police others in the competitions. These contest must be sour grapes, for all the sour moods they cause.

Maybe Makerworld needs to put a big disclaimer on the contest page saying “These contest are for fun and aren’t to be taken serious. These are not high stakes competitions” or something of the sort. Or just be more honest “These competitions are to generate content for the platform” Aka, the rules are loose because it’s about generating content, not creating high steaks competitions where the best and brightest fiercely fight it out for a million dollars, or whatever.

Almost need a warning when posting comments to contest entries like “The competitions are meant to be open and friendly, make sure your comment reflects that. Discouraging others or telling them their entry isn’t valid, will not be tolerated”

At the least, anyone caught trying to discourage others or leaving nasty messages should be banned from the competitions, and that warning should be posted front and center.

Thank you for your feedback, I completely agree with you. For serious fishing success, this bait is unfortunately not suitable, and I wouldn’t use it myself. Due to its size, it has very little buoyancy, which means only very small hooks would effectively work with it. And let’s be honest, small fish usually don’t interest us much!
However, as mentioned earlier, it should be seen more as a little fun for both young and old.

I am still new and don’t know how often this happens. I have participated in a few contests by now, but this is the first time one of my models has made it to the top. Since I started participating in the contests, I have been closely watching the winners and I can say that MW actually doesn’t decide based on download numbers or likes. Many factors play a role, which apparently are really evaluated by a jury, and honestly, I am glad it’s like that. I was able to secure one of the winner spots in the Animal Frenzy contest and won 40 euros, and I am not upset at all. In fact, I was very surprised that such a simple model could score points with its usefulness.

As I mentioned, I have had some experience in contests, but this is the first time that I have reached the top with a simple model. I wonder if this happens often, as honestly, I am not very keen on it. I am open to constructive criticism and happy to help others, but spending my evening having to justify myself and being worried about reports is not much fun.

Thank you for the feedback.

Hehe, pardon my little rant there, TommysCraft. I find it frustrating what happened to you. Though I don’t really take part in the contest myself; I don’t think anyone has the right or justification to go around and tell others what they can or can’t, or judging their entries. It’s up to Bambu to make that judgement, as it’s their contest. I think that kind of behavior is un-sportsman like and counter productive.

I don’t think it’s common for people to deal with that on an individual level though. Like there’s always someone in the contest complaining about something, but it’s a different person each time

You don’t need to apologize, you’re right. Bambu definitely needs to step up. :+1:

Part of the problem is the timezone difference. I’m not sure how it is for everyone, but it does seem like there’s a lot of activity that happens while they are asleep, so sometimes it can seem like it takes them forever to address certain issues. I’ve seen people get frustrated over the course of the day, only to see Bambu quickly come in and address it once their business hours start.

They need some community peeps in other regions and timezones to help fill those gaps.

I am so ready for that contest.

I spent entirely too much time laughing at this. I regret nothing.

In my opinion, while the frogs are good models in their own right, it’s a stretch to enter into the fishing gear contest. I wouldn’t do it if it were me.

But you did, and if MW is fine with it, no one should have problem with it. It’s definitely not acceptable to target you. If people have problem with MW’s decision, they should take it up with MW, not you.

Thank you very much for your honest opinion. Do you think that the current rules of the fishing competition do not allow enough flexibility for my model? I have to say that I see this flexibility. I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me which points my model does not fulfill. Your opinion could help me avoid such situations in the future.

I really enjoy fishing and go fishing almost every weekend. I have a couple of entries and one is a frog lure (!).
Yet I think it’s ridiculous for people to go out of their way to do gatekeeping of the contest. Even if you entered a bra in a fishing contest, claiming that it ‘ruins’ the contest is just ridiculous. It doesn’t ruin anything. It’s just there along with all the other entries.
They don’t have to download it, they don’t have to print it. They just need to scroll past. It’s not the contest’s job to conform to their expectations as much as it isn’t their job to control what constitutes a viable entry for contests.
I’m glad to hear your model was reinstated and I’m sorry to had to deal with this nonsense.

Technically, you created a lure, making it eligible to enter the contest, and I don’t fault you for that. However, it’s clear to everyone that it is essentially a toy, unrelated to fishing. Adding an eyelet to the model just to be able to attach a hook seems like a stretch.

I see it differently. In my opinion, it’s right to exclude such fun models from the competition. We as a community have fought and requested for months to have the entries reviewed to increase the quality of the models. Of course, dragons, toys, and keychains are popular, and you can tag anything with a fishhook. But if a hundred of these models are published and displayed first, the truly functional models won’t have any success.

There is a setting to filter and sort. I always use it, and I recommend you do the same.

This is a community-driven site/forum. The only way to change something is to like, download, or boost it.

Contests are not won based on number of downloads or popularity of a model. So having ‘extra’ entries is inconsequential.

I am already aware of that, but when hundreds of models participate in the contest that are not worthy, and they get better download and like numbers than the functional and possibly complex models, then these automatically receive less attention. In the end, I don’t care; I am satisfied with my models and how they perform in the contest, even if a frog gets much better reception.
