Joined the H2S family

So after 1200 hours of printing on my X1C I decided to add a H2S to the stable. After looking at the specs for it, the H2S was exactly what i wanted at the price point I liked. While I am sure the H2D with the 40w laser is amazing, I don’t need laser cutting or dual extruders. I vary rarely print more than 1 color at a time. It was simple for me. it was about build volume, and the simplicity of a single extruder along with the heated chamber. The time lapse works right out of the gate ( I have never gotten it to work on the X1C). The H2S is fast and quite and just worked right out of the box. Now on to hopefully printing with engineering materials,

You never printed with those on the X1C? Why?

I print abs and asa with the X1C all the time. PPA-CF, PPS-CF,PA6-CF is what I want to try out now that I have a printer with a heated chamber.

why would someone buy a h2s

Just a few things that come to mind:

  • Heated chamber
  • Bigger
  • Quieter
  • Smoother
  • More refined
  • Higher print temps for greater filament choice
  • Cutting attachment is a useful tool
  • Better AI detection
  • Better lighting
  • Better access inside the machine (cleaning)
  • More accurate (Out the box), or at a minimum, potentially more accurate
  • Illuminated status bar is a useful add on
  • Auto chamber cooling

I’ll stop here, but I’m sure there are more that can be added.

Alright, but what are the benefits the H2S serve over an H2D other than build size?
Edit: sorry if I’m being rude or anything, I’m just interested cuz I’m only 3 months into this 3D printing stuff with my A1 and just recently got an H2D a few weeks ago

For someone who only prints in one color (or multicolor and doesn’t care about purge waste) it’s $750 cheaper than the H2D.

Okay, but as in hardware-wise. I’m not talking about cost, build size or any of that other stuff, I just want to know what does the H2S have that the H2D doesn’t. If there really isn’t anything than I can see why that makes sense cuz its supposed to be a nerfed H2D but I just wanna know if I’m missing out on anything.

H2D can use up to the 40W laser, H2S is limited to 10W

no you are not missing out on anything and yes basically an H2S is a nerfed H2D.

H2D has everything the H2S has except for the build volume and the price.

Ah alr. I heard on yt it also has better toolhead acceleration since its lighter.

You can in fact print 350x320mm on H2D so it has a bigger print size compared to H2S, you just have load the same filament in both hot ends and cut the item into two parts. Im printing something that size right now.

Its pronounced there because I have beam interlocking turned on. The actual seam is not too bad. It is a GF filament so that helps too.

yeah i got the h2s also not interested in laser junk just want to 3d print, and the larger build size is what i was after im fine with the AMS single head feeding. I can minimalize poop pretty well with purge to object printing multiple items and volume flushing

It seems to me that the limitation on the H2D printing width is a bad design decision.
All they needed to do was widen the gantry a few cm to allow the right head to reach the full left extent of the plate and vice versa.

If they would have removed a few cm on each side of the bed then there was no issue either.

Maybe it’s good to watch the interview of dr. Tao on the H2D and hear all the design considerations that have been taken during the development.

I’ll watch the video later when I have time, but a key benefit of the H2 is the bigger print volume so to me having the H2D not able to print the full width of the plate without playing games with 2 spools of the filament and complex slicing seems IMHO an unnecessary limitation.

It’s odd to not be able to print everything the H2S can, especially if the bigger build volume is what drives you to choose an H2.

Choosing the size of a printer is weighing a lot of factors.

I have built my own Voron 2.4 and you can configure it standard for 250x250mm up to 350x350mm. Basically the only difference is the size of the profiles, rails and build plate.
So I chose the 300x300mm one, but the design allows you to build one of 1000x1000mm.
But why didn’t I do it?

Larger size comes with less stability, more weight, and less accuracy.
And yes, you can choose to make design alterations to minimize the impact or even improve them. But that all comes with additional cost.

So any choice taken in that is balancing all those factors.
