Layer 1 messed up

My new X1C has started to print first layer above the build plate. The printer first performs the bed leveling with out any problems, but when it prints the calibration stripes it is a couple mm 's above the build plate. I have tried several filaments as well as build plates. I have done a factory reset and several full calibrations and it is still happening. I am at a loss as to what is going on. I have never had these issues with my PRUSA printers, which a simple to troubleshoot.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.

From the picture you can see that you need to clean your build plate. There are finger prints all over it. Dawn dish soap and hot water. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel and most importantly don’t touch the build surface. It’s important that the calibration lines adhere well so the printer an calibrate correctly. The smooth PEI plate is probably the best for adhesion. Bumping the bed temperature 10c can also help once you get you get your bed good and clean.

I agree, but that is not the problem. The print head is several mm above the build plate when it starts to extrude. This leaves a floating “string” above the plate that will not adhere to the build plate. When working correctly the print nozzle should be around .2mm above the plate forcing the extrudes filament onto the bed.

The X1C is my fourth FDM printer and I have been 3d printing for over 5 years now. With my PRUSA printers you set the first layer offset manually. On the X1C is out of your control since it is automatic and it is not working properly now. The build plate has finger prints from me handling it after removal.

Check to see if you nozzle is loose or bent.

I decided to replace the print head which is less than two weeks old. It solved the first layer problem! I was surprised! So far it is fixed. It is straight and true so I guess it must be clogged.

I too am a loyal Prusa owner I own 4 MK3s now over 5 years still going strong and producing amazing prints. I too am having many issues.
