Maintenance

What type of maintenance do you perform on your printer and how often?

I could probably do a lot better when it comes to preventative maintenance. I just lube the lead screws once in a while and clean all the scraps out of the bottom of the chamber. Here’s the official recommendations:

Once a month give or take a few days.

I do everything that is recommended in the maintenance wiki for the X1. I dont clean the hotend since 95% is ABS. Since I also never have stringing I just blow air into the extruder. Nothing ever comes out.

Granted this a hobby not a business. I have plenty of time to do this maintenance.

The older I get the less I stress about rigid maintenance routines. I’ve noticed over time things tend to last for the same time regardless, whether starting from new and following the letter of the wiki/screen prompts or just letting things happen and reacting to faults (and screen prompts). The latter tends to be once a certain point is reached in the life cycle, but I’m doing this a lot earlier and not finding much difference.

It’s a tad controversial and goes against my OCD, still I feel safe that I’m not abusing the object as I continue to get good output and haven’t had any major incidents or excessive wear patterns.

I don’t recommend this path for all, I do have a certain level of mechanical sympathy and have this set up in a sweet spot from new. It does give me pleasure tinkering at times but generally it is a hobby and the time devoted to it is spare.
