Seems like it’s necessary for the contest, but the designs still violate the exclusive model guidelines as they are, in fact, still remixes.
Makerworld is saying that you can just post a creator model as original and on the description just state where it came from. huh?!
Now expect to see more people do that for other models too. Download someone’s model, say you modified “this or that”, upload it as original, profit! As soon as Makerworld makes this possible for a benchy, there will be more.
Also, as a side note, i am interested to know why did not Makerworld shared the STEP file themselves and instead they link the file to a specific user. Isn’t that giving free rewards/points/downloads to that user? Because it’s the only way of entering the contest? It’s really weird… it almost seems playing the reward system
@MakerWorld can you fix this before the obvious happens…
Make it extremely clear that this EXCEPTION is ONLY for this contest.
You know, big and bold like this ^^^^
Unless you are hoping for the massive problems it will cause. “MakerWorld said I could do this.”
Users don’t read or understand licenses as they should, thieves don’t care, confusion will be rife.
“Oh hey cool, a competition for an original CREATIVE benchy, I’ll scale up this benchy and make it big and call it a day.”
“I’ll just make a tall and wide benchy with no creativity whatsoever. I will win!”
Ahh, copied models…
They are too similar.
That vessel doesn’t look seaworthy.
Don’t forget to mark them as exclusive!
Just realized that. Seems not to be fair indeed. But just reading bio of this user, he’s in fact the co-inventor of the 3D Benchy https://www.stemfie.org/about
Finally not an issue. Maybe a way to support his action. But should have been announced by BL
Cheers

Did not see that, but even in that case, it’s gaming the system so the user can have the reward counts.
Don’t know how i feel about this, to be honest. It would be clever to Makerworld to host the file under their account so that there were no personal gains.
Also, looking at the contest entries i noticed that almost no one has credited the original model, as stated in the rules.
I had the same thought too
Did not see that, but even in that case, it’s gaming the system so the user can have the reward counts.
Why is that a problem? Shouldn’t he be able to get rewards for something he designed?
I think you misunderstood what i meant. Of course the creator should get rewards for his creation. I just think that this being a Makerworld contest, they should be the ones hosting the file and if necessary, compensating the creator.
But i am all in about transparency. It does not bother me, it’s just wrong.
um… Makerworld is one who runs contest + pays reward. its not gaming system at all.
Its not wrong at all. Makerworld are running contest in partnership with beachy creators.
Ah, I see what you mean now. I get your point on transparency, though personally I don’t really mind if creators self-host as long as the model’s theirs. Feels like they’ve earned the rewards either way.
Though to be fair, MakerWorld doesn’t seem to have handled it differently in past contests either, the Corcelain one had self-uploaded files too.
Ah, did not see that Corcelain one. It’s a Makerworld thing, so it seems
Edit: @MakerWorld @SupportAssistant please reach out
For the contest, since i am thinking of also joining, is there any condition besides giving credits/mention to the original creator? Are the uploaded models able to join the Exclusive program? I don’t want to go ahead and upload it without first having sure and i am seeing lots of uploaded models in the contest as Exclusive. That’s why i ask. Thank you
