Massive Issues with both Extruders on the X2D

Hello everyone.

I’ve had my X2D for a few days, and I’ve been trying to get the Aux Nozzle to work properly. Emphasis on “Trying”, because whenever I manage to almost fix something, another issue pops up right away. I’ve already reached out to the Support, but I wanted to ask her for additional help as well.

First thing I’ve noticed was that the Filament kept piling up in curved areas of the print:

You can see that there is a large clump of red filament right on the edge of that corner. This was printed with Glow PETG on the Aux Nozzle. Another absolutely desastrous print were these little pins, also printed on the Aux Nozzle:

I’ve tried Retraction Calibration, I’ve tried Flow Ratio Calibration and Pressure Advance but every single time the results came back essentially identical, with absolutely no indication of any changes at all. Here is one of the PA Calibration Prints:

So I essentially had to Brute-Force the Retraction Settings, slightly increasing and decreasing them until the Pins finally came out alright. Not great, still worse than on the A1, but okay.

But the Filament keeps building up / oozing / overextruding in corners:

Which results in a jagged, torn surface area:

So I figured, Okay, maybe it’s just PETG. Just try it with PLA. Only for the print to be completely covered with tiny holes:

To make matters worse, this ALSO happens on the Main Nozzle, again with PLA:

And at this point, I’m running out of ideas and frankly, am getting extremely frustrated.

  1. PETG and PLA have been dried. Multiple Times even, just to be sure.

  2. Changed the Retraction Speed and Length Settings, which fixed the Pins, but nothing else.

  3. Flow Ratio, PA and Retraction Tests pretty much all came back identical rendering them pointless

  4. Ive increased and decreased the temps

  5. Printing with Stock High Quality Settings, Printing with Adjusted Retraction Settings, doesn’t matter.

  6. Aux Nozzle is much worse, but happens to both the Main and the Aux Nozzle

  7. It doesn’t seem to happen with ALL the prints, it seems that the issue are linked to the Geometry of the Model

  8. No, it’s not the Seams, they aren’t placed near the spots where the holes or imperfections are:

  1. Lowered the Max Volumetric Speed, didn’t make a difference either.

  2. Switched between different Z-Hop Types, also doesn’t make a difference.

I have no idea what I’m supposed to do here. Printed on a 0.4 Nozzle, I’ve been using Sunlu PETG Glow Red, Sunlu PETG Red, Sunlu PLA+ Blue and Sunlu PLA+ 2.0 High Speed Grey. The PLA has been dried for 12 hours at 50 Degrees. PETG has been dried for 12 hours at 60. Doesn’t matter. Issues remain. Same Filament works flawlessly on the A1. I really have absolutely no clue anymore what’s even left to try.

You can do some cold pulls maybe try a high flow nozzel

unfortunately I’ve already done several Coldpulls and don’t own a High Flow Nozzle.

Now for this “effects” with PETG on the AUX I got the same results with oozing, blobs and things like this. But PLA seems to be ok ( like a bit better :smiley: ), and did not saw holes like this.

Now this is what I got AI suggestions:
usually caused by moisture in the filament boiling inside the hot nozzle, excessive retraction settings creating a weak restart, or general under-extrusion during fast movements. [1, 2]

Something else that comes to my mind. Are you sure you actually have all set for the proper extruder and nozzle pairs? As maybe after so many trials you have actually changed settings all over the place and now this affects both extruders?

I was confused a lot on how many places, menus, tabs and settings need to click and set. And sometimes by default it show some other tab/window/menu and you may end up setting something on the wrong place. So maybe good time to reset everything ( no idea how to easy do that, maybe re-install studio, or delete some profiles … ). As you have printer settings, then you have filament profile settings and overrides, and process settings per layer height …

Other thing maybe some problems with the PTFE tubes which maybe too tight and make the extruders stutter? Not sure what is your setup if you have AMS or directly feeding and etc. There are some problems with the buffer and the AMS feeding. So you have some options to possibly check. It is highly unlikely to have both nozzles clogged and both extruders worn out. So I would check on the settings and PTFE paths.

I print mostly with PETG from the aux, on an external non AMS roll, and you really have to tune your Pressure Advance manually. I use the test labeled PA pattern. Its going to be a relatively HUGE number. [one of mine measured a whopping 0.470 !!! ] It also is incredibly intolerant of moisture, if you have a dryer to print from, it’ll likely take some headache away. Even still, expect some random wisps and crumbles, the default cleaning procedure IMO doesn’t do well, despite how violent it is. It’s making all the right moves but not maintaining the right temps for the ooze to have completely stopped, prior to cleaning IMO.

It’s not clear exactly what your issue is, specifically the bubbles on Plain PLA. I know you mentioned it but you are REALLY sure that specific test wasnt random seam? :slight_smile: [the photo shows zero layers exhibiting more than 1 defect, the defect doesnt look “blown out”, it looks “emerging from within” — seam is occams razor] How’s your surroudning setup? Are you using like 4 ams with 12 splitters and track switches and rube goldberg machines? Whats plugged into each nozzle, a single directly plumbed AMS, external spool on a roller, etc ?

This with the random seam is interesting. He should be able to see it in the slicer if enable seams to be displayed.

I also got to crazy PA values and also high retraction values, plus some others to make it work acceptable. Do not remember too many problems with PLA though. But also not used too much.
