Missing stl files after adding first to plate

Hello fine people of the Bambu Lab Community Forum.

I am pretty new to 3d printing as a whole and even newer to my A1 (its been about two weeks)

In what I can only imagine will be a MUCH longer explaination than necessary, when I download a folder of files for a model from somewhere (be it Thingify, cults3d, makerworld, etc) and extract the compressed files, after I add the first file to the plate in Bambu Studio, I will try to add another file to the plate (going up to the top and pressing the box with a + sign) it will open the file select window of the folder I added the previous file from and it will only show that previous file. I have models that have several components to it and i would love to add multiples to a plate but the other stl files are missing. If I open the folder itself not through studio the files are definitly still there…just not in Bambu. If I move the files from that folder to say, the desktop, they will again show up in Bambu. Its just super annoying to have to add a file, open the folder itself, then move files to the desktop.

Any ideas on how to not have to do this?

I’m guessing you are using Windows, and using File Explorer, which by default lets you view .zip files as a folder.

When you open a file from such a “folder”, Windows decompresses that one .stl (for example) file into a temporary folder and then launches the associated application using the file in the temp folder. When you try to add another .stl to your plate, there is nothing else to choose, because no other files were placed in that temporary folder. In the file selection dialog, you’ll probably see that it is looking at a temporary folder:

There are a couple ways to work around this.

Try dragging the .stl files from the “folder” contents to another actual folder or just temporarily drag them all to the desktop and open them from there.

Right-click the .zip file and choose Extract all to put them
in another folder or on the desktop.

You are correct with your assumptions.

And yup, as it turns out I’m just a dumb dumb and didn’t realize I was opening files from a zipped folder. I had resized the window so the extract all button was hidden and I obviously wasnt paying attention to the zipper across the icon…

Look. I never claimed I was smart. I just didn’t realize I was this dumb.

Appreciate the help!

Thanks!

Being dumb is a stage in the process to greatness.

Unfortunately, it is a stage we all revisit often.

Ugh don’t I know it…at least about the revisiting part
