Mixed Color Sublayer problems

Is anyone using the Mixed Color Sublayer option with mixed color filament colors successfully?

For me, when Mixed Color Sublayer is enabled on a project that contains multiple separate objects, each assigned their own mixed filament slot, the slicer produces gcode with backward Z moves within each layer range. This causes the nozzle to dip back into already-solidified material, which catches on the print and knocks it over.

Here’s the Github issue report for it. Mixed Color Sublayer causes non-monotonic Z moves between separate mesh objects, leading to print failures · Issue #10399 · bambulab/BambuStudio · GitHub

I"ve had that in the past with single objects. Knowing that Studio can behave really strangely when running into memory issues, a simple PC restart resolved that for me.

Are there any models on MakerWorld that you know of that use the Mixed Color Sublayer option? I’d like to try printing them. I went as far as building support that tries to hold my model in place from the sides to try and keep it from being pushed over. It almost worked and it didn’t get knocked over but the horizontal movement of the nozzle still caused the layers to shift slightly.

Well, since it is applied like a color, any model works.

The magic happens in the filament allocation where you define the mixed color or gradient.

However, I still consider somewhere between an Alpha and a Beta release function as it does not respect speed limitations. Since it achieves a 0.02mm sub-layer height by pushing speed to 350mm/s to keep flow controllable, it is not easily applied to filaments that really need to go slower. I had OK results on PETG outer walls but the infill is shredded…

For me, it seems like any model doesn’t work.

If you slice a model that uses it, and then switch to the preview tab and look at the height of the sublayers it creates, they are out of order by height so that it prints one sublayer color and then dips down lower to print another sublayer color. Most of the time, it gets away with those small, sublayer, dips into previously printed colors but eventually the nozzle head catches a previously printed color and with the horizontal movement, pushes the model over.

Yes, I’ve had that issue initially as well and referred it to @SupportAssistant at the time.

Thinking a bit more about it, I then remembered Studio doing really strange things when running out of memory.
Using a power cycle (i.e.: restart ) before using the laptop for slicing allowed me to overcome that bug.

PS: I had hoped Bambu’s Studio team would put the memory issue and the speed increase to 350mm/s somewhere on their roadmap, but they probably have other things on their mind now with the Alpha-release of PrusaSlicer 3.0.

I just published my model where I’ve been having this issue. I’ve turned off Mixed Color Sublayer in its print profile for now but anyone interested can use the model to see it. Mixed Color Sublayer is OFF on the left and ON on the right. This is one of the rare instances where I got it to print.
