Model does not bound a volume

Hello,

I’ve been doing people scanning with a 3D Scanner.

I then clean up the scan in Mesh Mixer before taking it into Bambu Studio.

Once in BS, I cannot perform a Mesh Boolean. I get this error.

How do I fix this?

From my experience, you should not rely on the Boolean operations from Bambu Studio. They are too buggy, undependable and you’ll only end-up frustrated. Unfortunately I don’t have an alternative for doing them. The only boolean operations I do are either in OpenSCAD or Fusion 360.

I also tried boolean operations in Prusa Slicer but since they share the same codebase, it worked about as well as Bambu Studio.

Any idea how to fix the bound volume error?

What are you booleaning with? Are you sure it’s water tight?

You might have a stray point or polygon in the scan file that’s messing up the slicer’s boolean operation. Though MeshMixer should tell you that.

You need watertight models.
Using Blender, 3D scans and such usually produces a nice result on the screen but in terms of the mesh it is often a disaster.
You can try free online services like the one from Netfabb to fix the mesh to get a model the slicer can work with.
In general though it is best to use the right software for those jobs.
A slicer might work for basic operations but not so much on organic models.

He said he used MeshMixer, which should have told him if the model wasn’t watertight. Although, now I think of it, it might not actually complain about a hole, vs. non-manifold edges. All the years I’ve used it, I never tried it with, say, one polygon removed from a sphere to see what it says about the model.

What is the best software to make the modl water tight?

I was able to fix the model and make it manifold in MM.

Now I get this though.

I’m trying to make holes for brass inserts/magnets.

Just means the models is NOT really fixed and also that Studio isn’t reall great at cutting and merging model parts…
Sadly Netfabb was taken over by Autodesk and no longer offer any easy to access online repair tool.
If you don’t want to go through Mircrosoft or install a free Autodesk trial you can try this online service.
Might not be as good as the old Netfabb online tool but it is was free last time checked.

I just assume you have this model as a single piece and cut it into two for printing.
IF you can try use some proper program to cut the model TWICE.
Use a simple solid, like cylinder to cut the top from one copy and the bottom from the other at the exact same height.
This usually works much better than what a slicer is capable of.
You can try the same in Studio of course but this really only works well if the model if a proper solid and the mesh is not too complex.
More often than not Studio creates manifol problems it seem unable to fix.

I had the same problem and opened the file in Orcaslicer and dit it all there without any problem.
