Posted on two Reddit groups for feedback on the description, as made a real effort to try and make the instructions as simple as possible to customise for the end user.
Started to get some real momentum and ended up in the trending section, when I went to bed yesterday, was at 26. Today gone completely, I’ve scrolled as far as I can and it’s just not there.
Drop down in popularity makes complete sense when a model is losing momentum, but the model was still getting likes, downloads and mainly collections (as it’s unlikely you’ll want to print them yet, unless you are super organised). @MakerWorld removing it has killed the momentum this morning.
Two screen grabs from last night and this morning, so you can see it was still getting movement
Can’t figure out what I’ve done wrong, unless the activity looked odd due to the volume of collected vs liked / downloads? There are plenty of 2D models in the trending, which have remained there and mine was the only customisable tag trending.
Hugely frustrating, was going to add more to it today, but will hold off for now.
Edited to add:
No notification or message from BL / MakerWorld to advise anything is wrong
User engagement was still high, so can’t be that reason
Seems like you forgot to pray to the Makerworld gods.
All seriousness, that amount of engagement is not insane. You may have easily been pushed off.
They may have also tuned the algorithm a little. There have been complaints about models staying on the trending page for too long. Another point is that they are distancing the algorithm from supporting these 2D models in favor for more complex 3d models.
100% it could have gone down, I’d have then worked harder on adding more etc… until eventually accepting the moment had gone, but it literally got completely removed from the list, there’s some there that mine was moving faster than, still there today.
The model had been there two days! Also considered the 2D thing, which I sort of get, but I don’t think they understand the user base if they think everyone wants to print stuff that takes days to make due to ornate complexity. Some of the best prints are the simple ones (not saying mine was, these are a bit of Christmas fun that are hopefully useful, but you get the point).
I’d just like some fair play with this, still plenty of 2D models “trending” that were there before mine and not performing as well
Trying to figure that out is like rolling the dice. Sometimes you do everything right and it still doesn’t work out. Sometimes you don’t do anything and it gets hyped up.
I’ll call it what it is: trying to explain it with logic is bound to fail.
It may be due to MakerWorld, but it could also be due to user behaviour.
Perhaps you used the wrong tags, who knows.
What’s more, international taste is completely unpredictable! What you like yourself is often not what the masses like, which is one of the most painful lessons you learn.
It should also be noted that when you type in ‘Christmas gift tag’, you get a hell of a lot of results.
I can understand that it’s frustrating, but there are so many factors involved that, as I said, you can’t explain it logically. Often it’s something so trivial that people just don’t like it, or it’s simply the wrong time. Or other models that take away visibility because they are more successful.
Can you explain what you mean by ‘wipe out’? As I understand it, it’s only disappeared from the Trendy page? I mean, it’s understandable, as there are certainly other models that algorithm prefers.
The market is currently flooded with christmas decorations.
Just look at the last 30 days and see how many “christmas” models better download/print/boost ratio than you, taking away your visibility.
As in completely gone from trending, not just down in the depths of obscurity, but not even on the list.
It arrived on Trending either Wednesday or Thursday and was getting collected 200-300 times per day, with a big bulk of 200 of those overnight (in my timezone).
Yesterday, it was on track again for the same, but got removed and didn’t get any further exposure.
I’ve had a trending item that fell from popularity before (after it’s 15 minutes of fame) and it was a gradual thing where it dropped down lots of places of the course of a few days, this wasn’t, it was actually in the process of climbing up, had gone from being around position 50 to 26 before I went to bed, then just gone when I got up.
It was gaining more popularity than some of the ones left, so again, it’s not about popularity, it’s now been cut short due to whatever MW / the “algorithm” did
I think you’re misunderstanding something? or we’re talking at cross-purposes?
Trending is popularity! You can’t say that " it’s not about popularity" when it’s the factor that determines whether you make it onto the trending page an keep there in the first place.
As an extra post to provide some more context, I took another close look at the whole thing on the Tredning website. This time, I only looked at the last 7 days.
You’re competing with these juggernauts, who have over 1k downloads/prints in just 7 days.
Unfortunately its a bit like reading tea leaves. Without any insight into the algorithm you can’t really hang your hat on any number as justification for why a model should or shouldn’t be in trending. It could be based on any number of factors. Growth? Individual browsing habits? A/B testing? Seasonal promo vs long standing models? Etc etc. Sucks, but it is what it is.
Just as a side note, since Reddit was mentioned: People have been penalised for posting their own 3D models on other websites like Reddit. Not across the board, of course! However, Maker World often thinks that this is suspicious traffic suddenly coming from other sites.
What I meant by popularity isn’t the problem, is things were on an upward trend and were continuing, there wasn’t a falter in that popularity, the numbers were higher than when it first started trending. So it was popular within trending and didn’t just get less popular, it got it’s legs cut from it.
I wasn’t expecting it to over the top 10 or anything, but it was doing better than some of them that are still there now, the fact they were collected over 900 times in about 2.5 days is pretty good going.
That’s what I have a problem with, the in the list, then removed completely from the list. You can even see in the top 10 you posted there, the snow flakes are about as basic as it gets for a 2D model, they seem to have got away with it, if 2D is an issue.
I wonder if it’s as simple as that - I have logged a MW ticket to ask for what it’s worth, but won’t find out for a while.
MK is a law unto its self, stolen models from other platforms scalping for points, no problem, AI slop, fine as long as you’ve ticked that it’s a real photo…
These exact three models (including OP’s) are gone from the Trending but are together ar the 7 days likes ranking (position 20, 21, 22) (at screenshot time), may be a bug on the trending algorithm related to paging.
Even more popular than the first set, removed from Top 30 days trending within 3 days.
I know some on here don’t want to believe it, but MakerWorld is pulling models from the trending pages, I suspect via an automated process, badly formed algorithm, and I can only assume based on complexity.
Doesn’t matter if it’s what people want (collected over 2100 times in less than 3 days) if it’s not complex it gets pulled. Was at position 8 when I went to bed, then vanished this morning.
The good news is, we get to have more grinch models in there
There are other 2D models that have survived for a lot longer, but hadn’t hit the popularity of these, the Mickey and Minnie gingerbread tree decorations are still there, have been for well over a week, assume they passed the complexity test as they use 3-4 colours
Ticket logged before got the generic reply have updated it again today.
OT: Why another model for the same identical stuff? It’s better to do updates on the original one, you can also notify users when you make some changes or adds.
