Modifiers are splitting object walls

The fuzzy skin option has been amazing for creating textured prints however, there are parts of some prints that I need to be smooth. Using modifier geometry can do this but, it splits the model on the perimeter of the modifier which

a) Creates weak spots in the print.
b) Increases retractions/seems which can make prints with more complex filaments fail.

I understand this topic has been explored in other places on the internet without a solid fix so I am posting this here in hopes of making a central list of fixes/updates for this problem.

It was discussed in length here.

There was no work around at the time.

You could turn this into a bug-report.

Indeed i came across that during the search but I wanted to make a post specifically to track the fuzzy skin option as we can make a modifier that is a skin of the original, but recessed by a line width, to get fuzzy on smooth but not vise versa.

Speaking of that post, I believe the opposite of the fuzzy workaround, a copy of the geometry (instead of a skin) recessed by a line width with changed settings will do the trick for them. I will post the test over there.
