When printing to P2S I noticed a checkbox in bambu studio 2.6 named “Multi-color with external“, which wasn’t there before. I can’t find info on that checkbox in release notes or using google or any chat bot. Does anyone have info on it. Does it pause to manually change filament?
That being said I was thinking of printing dissimilar materials using the pause method + cold pull in between. Technically was able to cold pull without removing the hotend on A1 before. I just remove the PTFE tube with the filament still in, drop the temp, slowly pull the filament using both extruder and manually helping with the pull. Maybe it can also be done by pushing the release leaver, but I find it harder to do. The danger of doing that is that is that you can make the motors skip steps if you push a bit too hard. Have anyone tried. It would be nice to mix PLA and PETG for support if all the support interface layers are at the same level. More than 2-3 switches will be too much work to be worth it.
Technically buying X2D is worth it just for that, but there are too many limitations on the second nozzle and I don’t want to sell my P2S and switch now that I bought it - too much money wasted.
Hello, came across this and it caught my attention because i too, was wondering what the exact procedure is here with this function.. so i have a P1S, and i had a two color’d model, i saw the box so i checked it so i could try it out. it printed fine at first, then it came time. it automatically paused by itself… then it told me to remove the material which i did. although i got stuck at that point and then i could not resume from that point. i’ll have to try this again and i’ll keep you updated if i have success out of it. but if you come across some helpful information of what you are supposed to do, or what you are supposed to expect, please let me know. hope this small amount of information was some-what helpful. Bambu lab responded to me that this is a feature for A1 only. But they didn’t explain how it it works. Maybe it just replaces the material switch code with a pause. But it’s stupid to lock it to A1 only.
Below is the complete instruction for the External Multi-color Printing feature on A1 3D Printer when the AMS is not installed:
Function Description: This feature supports multi-color printing with filament on an external spool holder. You can manually replace the external spool during the printing process to create multi-color prints.
Activation Requirements:
Software version: Bambu Studio version ≥ 2.5.2.65 is required
Device requirement: This feature is compatible with A1 3D Printer, and you need to upgrade your printer firmware to the version that supports this feature.
Usage Steps:
Check the “External Multi-color Printing” option in the “Send Job to Printer” window of Bambu Studio
During the printing process, the printer will automatically pause and send a reminder when it needs to change filament. After you manually replace the external spool, printing will resume.

I wish @Bambu would do an UPDATE necessary to combine the AMS lite with the external filament spot. There is a huge hole in the market for them because so many of us cannot afford to purchase two AMS‘s to Daisy chain them together to get a fifth color. I can do all kinds of swaps and babysit prints and waste time (which is getting old fast) Just being able to do five colors in the first four layers would be so helpful!- if they would just update the software.
Let’s be realistic. I don’t think bambu cares about that. A hole in the marked means they are missing on people that want to buy something that bambu does not provide. If you are not going to buy second ams bambu are not loosing money by not providing you that feature. And companies only care about your money.
For me what’s more important is whenever you can’t use AMS. For example with TPU or other ams incompatible filaments. Example would be printing multi color phone case from TPU - it would take 2 or 3 changes. It’s not that much work
