I am new to Bambu, and still relatively new to printing at 4 years. I’m trying to print multi color with my new P1S, on a print that is a color change at raised text. The first attempt worked flawlessly, as to the mechanics, paused and waited for me to continue at the exact spot. The issue was that the text did not stick to the top layer of the main body. I unintentionally brushed my hand across it and the letters fell right off. So I tried every letter, with the same result.
My question is, will it work better (at least in theory) if I stay right there with it and switch as quickly as possible when it pauses? Or is that as good as it gets? Any help/advise is greatly appreciated.
Provided you use the same type of filaments so they bond together and do not wait too long between the printer pausing and you swapping materials, all should be fine.
PLA needs to fuse with PLA
ABS needs to fuse with ABS
PETG needs to fuse with PETG
You cannot fuse these combinations just using the PAUSE command:
PLA with ABS, PETG, TPU
PETG with ABS, PLA, TPU
ABS with PETG, PLA, TPU
TPU with ABS, PETG, PLA
Essentially, a like-for-like match must be used.
I just uploaded this model in my series of Fidget Spinners.
It has 16 different print profiles and all versions that can be printed without an AMS have a print profile to facilitate that.
6 different PAUSE-based print profiles allow the user to swap colours when they get to a different layer by manual intervention and without an AMS available. The printer automatically PAUSES and the user can remove the existing spoll and swap it to another.
These include the 7-colour Rainbow profiles, the 6-colour Rainbow, the 5-colour stripes, the 3-colour edges & triple, and the 2-colour dual profile.
They work perfectly and fuse without issue.
You need a reasonable amount of surface area to allow the bond to hold. Text that isn’t too small should be fine though.
You can see this demonstrated in my Shoe Lace-charms which have a small back and the text is bonded to the top. All could be achieved using the PAUSE command.
So as I suspected, I waited too long to switch them. I had mistimed the pause and was about 30 minutes late. I won’t lie though, I’m getting older and can’t remember much, I actually forgot for a while, so there’s that…
If you enable the PAUSE at layer feature in Bambu Studio when slicing at the correct layer (I find it easier to spot if you drag up from the bottom rather than down from the top as it shows the start of the layer not the end), you will be told by Bambu Studio when it pauses. If you have the Bambu Handy installed and running, it should also tell you when it’s ready to swap.
I have done exactly that this afternoon on two different prints using two different printers as I used it to embed magnets into entire ply different models.
Bambu Handy was on my hone next to me and alerted me at the correct time for both.
