Multicolor prints failing on small objects

I recently tried my hand at using the AMS for multicolor prints, the larger print models printed fine but when I got to a plate with four cone shaped objects the layers begin to get really ugly and then eventually one of them gets so bad that the nozzle hits it and it breaks away from the bed. They are part of a detailed model so I was printing in 0.1mm layer height on the cool plate using PLA. I was having some adhesion issues so I have the bed temp at 50 and the nozzle temp at 220. I slowed the print speed down a little too but after four attempts with each of them failing around three hours in I finally gave up and printed them in a single color with no problems.

I tried adding some manual tree supports but that didn’t fix anything either. I did not use a raft or brim, would that possible help? I’m curious if they are moving a little as they get taller but that wouldn’t explain why they printed perfectly with a single color. I also increased the Z-hop to 0.6mm.

Thanks in advance!

Here’s a picture of a failed batch. Every attempt resulted in failures that looked just like these.

Looks both top-heavy and inherently unstable when placed under dynamic load: I can imagine that downward printing force applied as a point load on the edge of the outside wall topples it over. Right? Since by now you’re tired of faffing around, let’s set this straight once and for all: apply some strong bed adhesive (preferably vision miner), increase your bed temperature to 80C, add brims to fully anchor the print and thereby avoid more failures, and limit your print speed on the first layer to no more than 40mm/sec. It may not be needed, but to further decrease the odds of the nozzle yet again hitting the print, add a check to the process entry entitled “avoid crossing walls” to enable it.

There, that oughta do it! Let us know whether it works.

Thank you! I’ll find some of the adhesive you suggested and when it arrives I’ll print a batch with your suggestions. I watched a video a while back that said the Amazon basics purple glue sticks were good but they are junk! Now I have 25 of these things sitting around. I really appreciate the tips and will definitely try them. I was leaning towards the objects moving around under the nozzle because of the small footprint. But hey, this is how you learn right?
