My first RC car using the CyberBrick system

I was lucky enough to be invited to the beta test of the CyberBrick ecosystem and got to design some fun stuff with it.

One project that is in a state to be shared is a an “Off-road” chassis using 3d-printed parts and some hardware found from Maker’s Supply. The external body is based on the Catmaw body I made earlier but it is possible to swap it out for other looks in the future.

The chassis features:

  • Rear axle with integrated motors and a four link suspension with 3d printed ball joints, 3d printed shocks with springs from Maker’s Supply
  • Independent Front Suspension with integrated torsion springs, stiffness can be modified by swapping out the springs to other ones with different rates
  • Bellcrank steering to eliminate bump steering
  • 3D printed TPU tires but for maximum grip they can be swapped out for real RC rubber tires using beadlock compatible tires.
  • Front and rear led lights, controllable from the hand held transmitter
  • Rear hatch to be able to reach the battery and on/off witch

I really liked working/designing with this Cyberbrick ecosystem and there is a lot of you can do with it and it’s modularity below is some form of sumary on my takes from using it.

  • Easy to use, no need to solder anything, I do have experience with arduinos and other rc related projects, but personally I dislike the soldering part and crimping the cables etc. no need for that here
  • One place to source the needed hw, I’ve built many other projects where you need to source the hw parts from multiple places/shops and pay shipping for multiple packages etc. It is convenient that it will be available as kits from MakerSupply
  • Easy to swap the CyberBrick modules between different projects, depending on how the model has been designed, it can be the matter of unplugging a couple of cables and losening some screws to move the boards to another project. And then load the configuration file into the board for the new project.
  • It is not only intended for rc vehicles, possibility to make other things that you can come up with, e.g. games, puzzles

Hi Polymech!

What an impressive suspension system you made there! Glad to know @Makers_Supply sourced the parts you needed. I believe many will be surprised about the ball joints and shocks also being 3D printed. Let’s explore the boundaries of 3D printing’s capabilities together!

Awesome project, excited to start designing with these.

When I was growing up, I always wanted to get LEGO’s Mindstorms stuff but it was so expensive. This seems like a better, cheaper alternative.

Ha Cartyski, I was lucky enough to get the old technic Pneumatic Garbage Truck/Crane kit combo some christmas as a kid and I’m pretty sure that broke the family bank yes…sob I was really lucky. I actually cannot find this kit combo anymore oddly…the truck was one of those front fork loaders that threw into the back and dual front axel giant wheels or you could make a 2nd boom arm crane. I was looking for it again for the set # but nada heh. rats.
EDIT: OMG FOUND IT , not the name i remember but yeah, a garbage truck style or a crane was weeks and weeks of fun without ever taking apart haha → 8868-1 Airtech Claw Rig

I’m buying these cyberbricks (lol) to remake this thing it was awesome!

about the cyberbrick

This look brilliant really the system and the truck above wow.

Superb design and detail as well, I think i’m going shopping for some parts here! I want to make the crane hahaha

This looks incredible, definitely on my list. I’ve seen your cars before but didn’t want to go through building an RC (never done that before) so this I really like how convenient this is.

I really like the frame/chassis on this model, in particular! It’s simple, but has all the right elements.

Funny how small the world is sometimes, this model is literally just sitting next to me in my office

GET OUT !!!

I am so flooded with both jealousy and memories right now…I did some more research on this model and apparently it’s much rarer and more unique in features, also it’s almost impossible to find in a newish condition under a grand really.

Wow, so I’ll bite…clean shelving, 92’ model in dust free condition…just who and where in the universe do you exist? Satan that you sitting on old sets to spite us when we get down there? NO you can’t play with it! :expressionless:

LOL

Haha, yeah sometimes I do need a reminder like yours to realize how rare these sets have become. In all fairness, I have to thank my brother for giving this one (and many others) to me some years ago (I don’t think he understands the value lol).

There’s actually quite some dust on it, but I still clean it weekly to the best of my abilities.

Speaking of more sets, I quickly went through my Brickset list and it seems like there’s many more old sets hiding on my attic, I’ll list a few: 4558 Metroliner, 8836 Sky Ranger, 8460 Pneumatic Crane Truck (hiding on the left of my picture), 8462 Tow Truck and then there’s a bunch of System sets including 6090 Royal Knight’s Castle, 6286 Skull’s Eye Schooner and 6277 Imperial Trading Post.

So yeah, I probably should start sorting through all the bricks and start building some of those sets again haha.

Also apologies to OP for going off-topic here, but nostalgia hits hard sometimes

Polymech3D is probably printing a new version of the crane as we tattle on here

Those are some really good sets, I think I had the Knight’s Castle 6073 that unfolded or something if that’s the right one. There were a massive number of castle sets back then phew.

Well back on topic of the bricks yes…

I think, honestly, I’ll grab some when they come out - but considering we can print technic already (and you can only really do it with a 02 nozzle properly for the tolerances of “lego” (I heard the injection is down to .001 !!) maybe, just maybe we can re-design the entire set using less bricks and stuff like Polymech3D did here with his jeep to modernize, well all the sets really not just the pneumatic ones above.

I hope he can post a quick show of all the parts from the tester kit he got. Pneumatics might be a long shot hmm, I was going to say use the old water in a plastic plunger trick for the pneumatics… but really. repurposing actual metal ones from the set at a 2 bucks each is going to be vastly superior eh hehe.- for this part we could use the vanilla ones from the set as powering them from this cyberbrick system will be child’s play. I highly doubt the voltages will be that far off it being lego.

Ha, wouldn’t that make it a Hybrid Cyberbrick?
