New Hotend Rack Patent: Desktop X2C Flagship or Expensive H-Series?

With the recent publication of Bambu Lab’s latest patent applications I wanted to share a few thoughts on what this really means for the upcoming X2C and our desktop printing ecosystem.

  1. Patent Scope vs. Reality (Why 9 Bays Doesn’t Mean “Industrial Only”)
    In patent filings, companies typically register the broadest and most extreme embodiment of their technology (in this case, an illustration showing a 9-bay rack). But the real patented innovation isn’t the number of slots—it’s the single-motion synchronized hotend dock/release mechanism and the 15°–40° angled magnetic latching.
    Because the extruder stays on the toolhead and only the hotend is swapped, this mechanism is entirely modular. While a 7–9 bay setup fits larger machines, a compact 4-to-5 slot rack can easily fit inside the standard 256×256×256 mm X-series chassis without sacrificing bed size or airflow.

  2. The Market Reality: Filling the X1C Void

  • The Prosumer Sweet Spot: With the legendary X1 Carbon officially discontinued earlier this year, there is a clear empty seat in the $1,200–$1,500 prosumer desktop space.
  • The Competition: With budget toolchangers like the Snapmaker U1 gaining traction, Bambu Lab needs a true low-waste, fast-swapping desktop answer. The dual-nozzle X2D is a great step, but the X2C with Vortek-style hotend swapping is the true generational leap we’re waiting for.

3. Timing & Price Predictions

  • Timeline: The patent priority date goes back to November 2025. A 12-month development and tooling cycle points directly toward an announcement at Formnext (November 2026) or early Q1 2027.
  • Pricing: If Bambu Lab aims to dominate the desktop market once again, I anticipate the X2C Combo (with AMS 2 Pro & hotend rack) to land around $1,350 – $1,500 USD. Anything significantly higher would push it out of reach for most prosumers and makers.

What do you all think? Are you expecting a 4–5 hotend rack on a 256 mm³ bed, or do you think Bambu will take a different approach with the X2C?

I Suppose a nozzle swap with a smaller build plate “could” be a viable solution, but look at the M1D from Sovol. Its a tool changer that falls right into that exact price range. Not only is it a tool changer, and not a nozzle swap, it has 2 tool heads and can do two prints at the same time.

IOW BL has to really step up it’s game now, it isn’t just Prusa with large tool changers, and not a toy maker like a U1, but the Sovol has variations of the M1D that has a heated enclosure like the X and H series with a larger build volume than the X. 30x30x35CM build volume. The X2D has already lost some build volume for the added aux nozzle, which is not a true dual nozzle system like the H series.

If the X2(C) were to be made it would lose even more build volume unless they redesign the cabinet to make room for the Vortek rack. The H2C lost 20mm, the X2D lost 20.5mm, and would more than likely lose about another 10mm of build plate and require a special sized plate like the H2C.

Now if BL wants to enter into the multi tool head competition, it would have to be an all new machine, and would replace the flagship H2 series. I don’t see that happening any time soon though, not with the upcoming laser launch, but maybe next year. If true, then we should be getting snips about it this coming Fall.

If it really comes out next year as you said, I should stop waiting and buy a 3d printer. It’s best to wait another 1-2 months and check for leaks. Isn’t it?

Common mistake with tech. Something new is always coming out. If an item fits your use case and budget don’t be afraid to buy it.

Sovol hotend changer looks extremley similar .

Thanks for reminding me, but I already knew. What I expect is only to develop a zero waste 3d printer from Bambu Lab that appeals to a medium budget (up to $ 1500). They will probably release a 3d printer in November. Is it worth the wait of three months? If it doesn’t meet my expectations, I’m already thinking of buying another 3d printer.

I think that if they do have an X2C in the works, as described, it would be worth waiting for even more than 1 to 3 months. I’d be waiting until Q2/2027, if the next printer comes with multiple toolheads, heated chamber, zero waste, multi-material capabilities, and (hopefully) with 3rd party integration…or at least, add-ons.

Apart from third-party integration, everything you mention is exactly what I need. I hope they offer them for sale at a competitive price and as soon as possible.
