New PC Flame Retardant Filament

Did anyone else notice the new filament added with little fanfare?

Anyone have plans to us it in their projects?

I like PC but a use isn’t jumping to mind. Those little ESP32 project boxes they show would be a silly application, those battery holder would be OK if the are lithium or something else that is going to ignite. It’s just pc with a fire retardant, and the retardant is unlikely to do anything good to the properties. What is it usually? Some kind of bromine compound?

I would not use it without knowing a lot more about it.

Flame retardant materials generally get that property by adding various chemicals that scavenge free radicals that are the reactive agents in flames.

That used to be done with halogens that create toxic environments when they are exposed to flames but now there are other additives and methods that are less toxic.

So did someone find a way to not only use up stores of fire retardant chemicals that forced recalls on baby blankets, bedding, halloween costumes, etc at various times for other health hazards, and create a hot new product and simultaneously get rid of chemical waste?

Or is this filament using less toxic ways of becoming flame retardant?

I wouldn’t go heating it up in an extruder without knowing. This kind of thing likely coming out of a Chinese factory should be approached with all due caution before using it.

This is really good advice, I wouldn’t try it without knowing what the agent is. At best it’s not bromine.

More generally, this is a filament that is going to be rarely used. What about the filaments people use every day? We only know about the PLA, what about all of the other additives? Take a look at these pictures, if I read it correctly he saw this effect on one printer after one print.
