Hi Mcgee, I am a noob to 3D printing also. As a new member I can’t make a post. I am having issues with my first print on the PS1 - getting strands - uneven surfaces etc - tried multiple orientations - calibration - can’t get a good result. if you can help great - if not - at least this comment will up my trust level so I can make a post - which is an annoying feature of this forum !
Welcome to the forum.
Can you include more information about your problem? Pictures are always helpful. What filament are you printing?
Hi John, just using the PLA as a start as it comes with the machine - but ultimately I want to print in ABS ( hence the PS1 model ) I understand that PLA is the most user friendly - its a simple part - see attached photos of 2 different attempts from different planes
Are you using supports for this?
Support would allow you to print parts of a model that are not on the build plate but extend out with nothing below them. The inside of this is an example, as would be the lip if you had it on the smaller end.
Forgive the janky circle. This section will allow you to enable and pick which supports you want to use.
For starters check that and slice the model, you’ll see how it works. There ard differences in support types.
Normal makes a grid or square/rectangle maze like structure under the parts that need to be supported.
Tree/organic makes supports that look like they sound. Uses less filament can be easier to remove, not always.
This is a thumbnail overview of supports. I’d recommend doing a little reading or hitting YouTube for more info, as it can be a topic that needs detail and there are quite a few settings you can tweak. I’d start with using Auto supports until you get a handle on it.
Well right away I can tell you you’re printing the part that needs support or to be reoriented. FDM printing can’t print circles over air. There is nothing for the filament to build on.
makes sense ! I will give it a go now - thanks so much for your help
thanks Jon - same replies coming in stating the same thing. appreciate your assist !
Someone actually asks me for help by name and I’m taking a nap, my shame is immeasurable . Luckily you were the best hands with these two guys. Welcome to the forum!!
Ok - so here is final result using the auto support feature. it has the supports covering critical surface - does this break off ? it’s pretty stuck - or should I use another method - attached is the 3mf file
ROT300-DELRIN-BUSH.3mf (125.3 KB)
Yes it will break off. A set of pliers can be helpful for the stubborn bits. Suggest using “Tree” support in the future as it prints faster, uses less filament and can get places grid filament can’t
Here is the wiki article regarding supports. It has a lot of good info.
yeah I managed to get it off with some force - the support method was the trick to getting rid of the errors. I will play around with the support settings a bit more.
TREE was the answer - perfect ! thanks a heap
