I am a newbie to the 3d printing world, made a few prints, and now I want to customize a stl I have downloaded from thingiverse
I want to be able to remove the text, and replace w a logo in svg format. I would also like to be able to change the shape of the marker sockets. I have used freecad to build a solid from the stl, but then I get stuck. The solid behaves as one object when I try and delete any selection. Internet says to just build my own model, easier to edit, etc. I thought it would be easier to edit an stl file, but could use alot of guidance in the right direction.
Original author provides a f360 file but I have freecad, should I give up on freecad?
Do you have a friend with Fusion 360? If so, have them translate the file into STEP so you can read it into FreeCAD. If you can’t find anyone, let me know.
Hi! Welcome to the wild and weird world of 3D!
The author of that posted the Fusion 360 file with it.
Most do not, but will happily do so if they see your request. Often people may not be back on the site for months.
That said, I have F360 so I opened it and converted it to a STEP file. Some convert with no problem, some not so much.
Many use FreeCAD and same with F360. I stick with it because I know it’s dumb logic, LOL.
OOPS! It just told me STEP files are not allowed to upload. Probably to avoid trademark and copywrite issues.
I’ll post it for 24 hours to my G-Drive.
Thats awesome, thanks for the help, I really appreciate the guidance.
Just grabbed the file.
I’ll give it a go in Freecad, see if I can get it the way I want, honestly, its a bit of a learning curve, but I like the lack of the “cloud”. If it still stymies me after a few more attempts, maybe its a sign to try f360.
I’ll post results,good or bad,in the future.
Once again,thanks for the help
My pleasure!
F360 is free for hobbyists and students as long as you don’t make serious money for your designs.
How they know, I don’t know, but that sure ain’t me LOL
I’m closing the link, don’t like to leave that stuff open.
Look forward to your success!
I tried FreeCad at the Last weeks, but it is absolutly not mine. I use the maker and creator edition from solid edge 2023. Maybe you will give it a chance.
BR
I tried to start F360 today, but didnt make it past start up. It said I was limited to 10 saved documents, I’m a newbie trying to learn the software, thats no help to me, so I uninstalled. Looks like I’ll have to go back to freecad
I didn’t work with Fusion360 since they removed CAM, but this sounds to me like a limit in files you are able to save. But normaly the program should run after this. I worked with a lot of CAD-programs, but in my opinion freeCAD was the worst :-/
Hi @sledmanjones,
you can only edit 10 documents at a time in Fusion 360.
That means you can create as many as you want, but when you reach the limit of 10, in order to edit/create a new one, you then have to set a file to Read Only.
Here in the video you can see that well, hope that helps.
