I just received my new X1 Carbon a few days ago. It came with a two sided “somewhat” flexible build plate (one side PLA, the other PETG, etc). It also came with two very flexible “extra” cool plates with adhesive backing. What am I supposed to do with those?
I did my first print just on the “somewhat flexible” two sided cool plate, but later decided I was supposed to stick the very flexible adhesive backed one on top of the “not so flexible” one. So that’s what I did. (Sadly, it is not quite perfectly positioned. )
But I am confused. I assume they are different because they are to be used in different circumstances, but I do not know what those circumstances are. How are the two different build plates supposed to be used?
Sorry, this sounds like a stupid question to me so I apologize for it - but it still would be nice if someone could explain the difference to me (and how I am supposed to use them).
You are lucky it seems, I did not receive any extra buildplates or stickers. But if they have an adhesive on the backside, are rather flexible I would bet they are just stickers for the buildplate to put onto.
Have a look at the wiki and the video and see if they appear to be that. Else a photo of them would help.
The X1 Carbon comes with one steel sheet that has a “cool plate” sticker on one side - the other side is termed “Engineering Plate” and is meant for non-PLA filaments. It also comes with two (I think) spare cool plate stickers, since the sticker is a consumable.
For me, I don’t use either one - I bought the Bambu dual-sided textured PEI plate and use that for many things, as well as the Wham Bam PEX plate that I use when I want a smooth first layer.
I also got the two sided “Engineering plate/Cold plate” and the two stickers. There is a file on the printer for a tool to make it easier to replace the sticker should you damage it but to be honest, I also got the textured plate and only rarely use the cool plate. Not because of the whole glue stick thing but because i like the finish it leaves.
