Not printing extruded text on top layer

Hi. New A1 owner & first post. I tried searching for a solution but didn’t quite see an exact fix. I generated a part in SolidWorks, converted to STL. The raised text shows up in Studio preview mode but fails to print. I am slowly getting up to speed on settings & maybe realizing it was already telling me that. My question is how to I solve this issue? I’m on current v1.7.3.50. Using default 0.2mm settings, 0.4mm nozzle. I tried different text size up to +1mm but still not working. Alternately if I use the Text tool inside Studio I get a very nice print very similar to my CAD generated, but its quite limited. I also tried the exact same text but extruded cut 1mm, that printed beautiful so there must be something about how its interpreting the ‘top’ layer?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Probably the text size is so small it wont allow two walls:

Select detect thin wall and it will try with one. Or make the text larger / bold.

Selecting Quality>Wall generator>arachne might also help.

I don’t think the CAD generated text size is the issue because CAD font is larger than the font I selected from Studio as a different test & it printed that fine. Also when I used the same CAD text but cut into the top surface 1mm (basically reversing it), that also printed fine. Nice crisp letters.

I will try your suggestion of thin wall detection & Arachne. Another post I read suggested something along those lines but the menu/settings looked a bit different than what I’m seeing on this current Studio version number. Can you elaborate on or suggest links I can read that discuss these terms in more detail so I can understand what exactly the settings pertain to?

Thanks in advance

Well, you can mouse over the settings to get a brief description:

This is the main issue imo, the way I understand it walls are usually generated in pairs (say inner and outer), so how wide is the wall? Quality tab>Line width, its about 0.4mm by default. So if some detail is not 0.8mm thick it isn’t going to print in classic mode, unless you check the ‘detect thin wall’ setting. Then it can be one wall wide or ~0.4mm.

Then we suggest Quality>Wall generator>arachne because classic mode prints constant width walls where arachne can vary the width.

So, you may be fine just switching to arachne or just setting the detect single wall when using classic mode. Either way, I’m still assuming this is the issue because its about the only thing that can be (other than things that don’t fit with your description(s)).

So here is the CAD model for reference, extrusion distance = 1mm.
If I invoke Arachne but do not alter the default settings shown, the post slice looks like this. Now I see the text pretty good which I didn’t before under Classic. Assume that is a positive sign & should give this print a go?

Yep that looks good it should print fine.

Again, this was not due to the extrusion height it was due to the letter / number width. It was not at least two line widths wide so with default settings (classic walls and no detect thin wall set) it won’t print. Arachne has variable line width which allowed it to print.

It printed beautifully this time by switching to Arachne & no other setting adjustments. Thanks! Much more to learn on all this stuff but I’ll call it a win for today.

I forgot to ask, what are these white dots & stripes telling me?

The white dots/stripes show where the seams are. You can turn them off in the right hand side bar.
