With the proper input tube on the rear of my P1S, can I use 5 colors (4 from the AMS, one from the rear) on one project?
No, the AMS has motorised feed and retract the rear spool does not.
The AMS and external spool are not used in combination with each other.
Depending on what you print and how you setup the job, you can print different colours further up the model by swapping out the existing colours (that are NOT being used during swapping) with a different colour.
It is important to note - this requires care and not many designs can benefit from this.
Take a look at this profile I created for someone else’s design.
The original model shown in brown requires 5 different colours to work. This normally could only be achieved using two AMS units.
I used a simple trick to allow all 5 colours with a single AMS.
Colours when you start printing.
- Black
- Brown
- Beige
- Red
However, the eyes are white in the printed model and you have no white in the AMS.
I added a pause to the print profile at 380 that will stop the print process and alert you it is paused. At this point, you REMOVE the red filament and replace it with white instead.
You then resume the print and it continues printing. When it gets to the eyes, it paints them white.
The trick is to make the eyes red in the model and because you swapped the filament during the printing process AFTER the red is no longer required, the printer doesn’t realise the red is white.
Two things to note:
- I have not tested this using Bambu Lab filaments that have RFID tags, I don’t know what, if any role this would play when you swap them.
- The PAUSE command is not required to achieve this, it just makes it easier to remember to perform the swap if you were not watching the whole job as it doesn’t move beyond the part that becomes white. Essentially, this is a safety net.
Great explanation. Should work fine with RFID filaments too as the printer doesn’t currently check RFiDs mid print.
Thanks.
I had to guess as I’m waiting for my P1S to arrive.
I try not to state facts that I don’t know are facts, so, your confirmation of my assumption is very welcome.
