On the subject of serviceability of 3D printers

When I recently had to replace my hot end, I thought, this is cool, they really make this easy. But then I put on my consumer glasses and realized that I’m crazy for thinking that.

You see, in my day job, I regularly work with connector technology that is fine pitch and delicate. Whereas I can’t discuss the exact nature of my work, suffice it to say, if you’ve ever taken apart a cell phone, it’s that level of miniaturization but on a much higher level.

So I looked at the connector that Bambu has on their hotend an the installation instruction videos and it got me to thinking. This industry still has a long way to go before they can call this stuff user-friendly. Here’s what I mean.

I can’t pinpoint the exact manufacturer, but I suspect this connector is likely either a JAE or Hirose style. According to a typical data sheet, this class of connector was never meant for frequent insertions, even though it might handle more than a dozen. It’s intended use was for miniaturization like cell phones where it would be installed once at the factory and left that way for the life of the product. Bambu’s videos show someone manually handling it, which is absurd.

Now if they wanted to improve this, two things have to happen, first, the connector has to have some type of guide holes or dowels to ensure proper seating. Second, it needs a tab on the back that can be grabbed with a small pair of needle nose pliers.

However, in the real world, for a consumer replaceable device, as a rule of thumb, you never want the consumer to be handling a cable, especially a fragile one like this, if you can avoid it.

Given that printhead nozzles are by their nature field replaceable units, if Bambu really wants to up their game, this device should be a cartridge not something that can be easily broken. In other words, if this is going mainstream, this has to be as easy to replace as a toner cartridge is on a laser printer. It definitely should not be exposing the PCB to the consumer.

Good points. I work a lot with industrial connectors, and I was kinda annoyed with having to deal with three tiny connectors to change the hotend on the X1.

This has kinda inspired me though. I wonder if I can make a little magnetic connector adapter for the JST type connectors on the board and the hotend wires.

Seems like there’s magnetic pogo connectors on Aliexpress for a reasonable price. Fairly unreasonable prices on Amazon and other US options. Like $10-20 per connector.

Might try this out a bit. Solder or connect a JST directly to the magnetic pogo on each side of the connection. I think the magnetic connection would be able to hold on during high vibration moves.

Main thing would be if the connection could handle the current for the heater. Although the existing wires and connector are pretty small already.

Yes, all the wires for the heater, thermistor and fan could be in one keyed male-female plug instead, which would simplify things immensely. I have actually considered it for my P1P as I think there is enough room behind the cover for one.

None of the connectors on the printer are designed for a high number of mate/demate cycles. They wear and contact quality suffers. But it takes a few dozen cycles. They’re a pain to pull out and put back in for sure, and easily busted if you aren’t careful, but I doubt most people will have their printers long enough to wear out the connectors themselves.

I can tell you that if you accidentally plug the front part cooling fan in wrong the printer will still command it, except you have speeds 0 or 100% unlike when it’s installed correctly and you get 10% stepping… long story but I did that.

Even if they do, the print head board with the connectors is available for replacement at a very resonable cost.

Was trying to see if there was something off the shelf that could work for this, but couldn’t find anything too promising.

Looks like I get to tinker with some design work for these pins.

Also unless the hotend, thermistor, etc are being changed a bunch then it should work out fine.

I think this is also the reason for the full hotend bambu offers. If someone uses say a .6 then bambu is thinking ok it should be in the machine for a long time.
