@Makerworld: before I’m wasting my time - is it ok to upload “mixed” designs which contain standard STL files AND customized SCAD?
If your question boils down to this…
Can I choose to include one or more 3MF and/or STL file(s) WITH my OpenSCAD file(s)?
Yes.
I have, if that helps.
I prefer to include a 3MF (STL is fine) and the OpenSCAD so the user can see one or more examples of what can be achieved.
It also allows you to provide printing profiles including strength, quality and more.
As a user, I prefer to see those examples and know the customizer-generated files will print.
The user may choose to download a 3MF rather than the STL version of their customisation, but, you can always tell them to export a STL version and insert it into the 3MF file you provide.
No, I’m not talking about examples. Rather, I mean designs that consist of several components, not all of which are available as OpenSCAD files. Many objects cannot be created with good quality (with reasonable effort) using OpenSCAD.
It would be nice if @Makerworld would clarify this. Otherwise I might just give it a try, unfortunately with the risk of deletion and points being deducted.
You have to cite an example as I am lost trying to figure out what you mean.
You wish to enter an OpenSCAD contest whilst providing limited OpenSCAD content that would form your entry.
At the same time you suggest OpenSCAD is unable to produce “good quality”, I assume your “mixed content” would be providing the good quality parts that you couldn’t create in OpenSCAD?
If I did understand your meaning, despite you not providing an example of what you mean, then there is a problem.
You enter a contest to showcase the subject matter, not trash it.
The reason BL hasn’t clarified your request is because your view is wrong.
If you believe OpenSCAD can’t produce quality output then you can’t enter a contest which requires your work be created with it.
If you believe you can’t produce quality output then you haven’t mastered it. There isn’t much that can’t be created using OpenSCAD, trust me, I used it for years.
I would be interested to learn if in your mind “quality” means “precise designs”, “detailed designs” or something else. Either way, you are mistaken.
Maybe some parametric technical components and some more organic/sculpted parts better done in, say, Blender, e.g. a parametric box (scad) with an emblem or figurine as stl?
I’d guess that should be ok, but that’s only my opinion.
Please read my post again, I wrote explicitly “with reasonably effort”. I know that I can create almost everything with OpenSCAD. Nonetheless, there is a reason that no commercial design studio uses OpenSCAD as their main design software. It’s about efficiency. I use the appropriate software to achieve a goal as good and as quickly as possible, and that can include multiple 3D design software.
This is nonsense. On the one hand, I only created my initial post 11 hours ago, and on the other hand, Makerworld can respond negatively instead of simply remaining silent.
I’m talking about “detailed designs”.
This is the view I was speaking about.
The contest is specifically about OpenSCAD and what can be created with it. Not a contest that has a sprinkle of OpenSCAD code that produces something, but, other parts are provided without any customisation.
If you’re not going to create something entirely in OpenSCAD with the user benefiting from the model produced using the customisation options you provide that affects the model your code creates - then yes, you would be wasting you’re time.
There are many other contests available and due. Focus on one that you can excel at and others can truly benefit from the designs you provide.
I’d say as long as there is a customize option that supplies a meaningfull adition to the model that should be fair game. Though a complex model with just a name sign or something probably won’t get you a high rank I don’t see anything wrong with posting that either.
