Orca Slicer or die!

I exclusively use Orca Slicer for my P1P.

If BL takes away MQTT (Home Assistant) it will be annoying but not a deal breaker.

If BL takes away the ability to use Orca, mine is going up for sale on eBay and I’ll be shopping for a new printer.

Think long and hard before you make this change Bambu Labs.

I think they’ve made their bed already. They definitely want Orca out of the picture, under the guise of caring for our printers “security”. … what a bad joke, given that their main reason for justifying imposing this c.r.a.p. on us it’s their own failure to detect and manage their own cloud security problems. And the argument that demonstrates their hypocrisy on this is the fact they also affect the LAN only print mode, as it may still, somehow, be connected to a public network and this opens us, the users, to hackers attacks… really Bambu? how stupid do you think we are? Who the heck is connected through an unsecured public network to print? You want security, then take down your damn cloud (it serves really no useful purpose other than to control users) and leave just the LAN only active. I don’t want or need to have my files going through your cloud (in China, or where the hell it might be) to be able to print them. All I need is for my printer to connect to my LAN. In this respect, you Bambu, are the major (i dare say critical) security risk for all of us, not the other way around.

Edit:

It’s like in the gag below, where Bambu is the fox and our private networks are deemed to be …

They are trying to pre-empt the problems from stratasys, since Bambu can say thet are not interested in the professional user.

There is a section in the blog post specifically regarding Orca Slicer.

Does this mean I won’t be able to use Orca Slicer in the future?

Bambu Connect enables integration with third-party software, such as Orca Slicer by using the file transfer method shared in the wiki. Before announcing this change publicly, we shared it with the lead Orca Slicer developer to ensure alignment and collaboration. Moving forward, we remain committed to working closely with them and other partners to facilitate the integration of Connect software, creating a smooth and hassle-free experience for all users. We previously highlighted these upcoming changes in an earlier blog post, where we clarified that we cannot guarantee long-term support for aftermarket software or hardware that interacts with the printer or its heating elements.

Our team is actively working on submitting the integration code for Bambu Connect. Once submitted, it will be up to Orca to decide when and if to incorporate it into the slicer, enhancing the user experience. We anticipate the code will be available on GitHub within the next few days, ready for integration into the Orca codebase.

right, I was about to also post about bambu connect.
If I had to guess, from bambus perspective orca slicer doesnt have a home website per say and just a github. Even on their github they say if you used any website not github you probably have a malware copy. Having tons of malware enabled orca slicers trying to connect to bambu probably is a security issue so they were designing bambu connect anyways with third party integration so they closed a security concern and provided an alternative means of connection. Or sure its more fun to say they are going the apple route walled garden.

Fun fact: It’s not us saying that. It’s Bambu’s CEO (Tao) who has repeatedly said it. We’re just “quoting” him… (without quotes)

This is not fun, this is fact. Tao was on CNC kitchen and stated exactly that. He views himself as the Chinese Steve Jobs, not Josep Prusa. I found him smug and arrogant just like his company’s emails they’ve sent to me and others on this forum.

To me, that looks like a PR stunt or maybe backpedaling. Either way, it is interference with the natural flow of the open source community. I call BllshT!!! On Bambu.

This tactic is “Identical” to when the PRC said that Hong Kong would remain a democracy. How long did that last? Only the gullible fanboys would honestly believe that Dr Tao has our interests at heart. This is the very first step in locking down the interface.

What’s next?

  1. Currently Orca allows one to Bypass the Bambu Makerworld promotion page. Expect this to go away.
  2. Presently, the addition of external filaments is still supported but watch that too go away. At first, it will seem like a bug. Then people will complain here and on Reddit. As Bambu figures out what they can get away with, they will gradually turn up the boil until the frog is cooked.
  3. Expect tracking data to go back to Bambu’s servers of what you use your printer for, even in LAN mode. You think they were just interested in your Logs, just wait.

If Bambu does this any of this, they can expect to come to attention of the US commerce department. TikTok will be a watershed from much smaller Chinese companies like Bambu who make it clear that they are leaving open hooks for the PRC to engage in industrial espionage. You can’t even access this Bambu Forum inside of China. China Firewall Test - Test if Any Site is Blocked in China

Is Bambu Evil

And how does this fix things like live video in home assistant without use of their (as yet not on my os) software? Oh wait it doesn’t.

I need to be able to use this all locally without any cloud/3rd party auth nonsense, I live rural with very intermittent internet access. I 100% expect things to not need internet access at all, ever. Is a pretty big “stuff you” from Bambu tbh.

Bambu released software to make their printers compatible with

Orca slicer bambu-connect

What a load of rubbish. The US Commerce department cant and wont do a thing. Bambulab can chose what thier printers can and cant do. Not allowowing 3rd party tools to interact with thier printers is 100% up to them.

Anyone that buys a bamblab printer and then complains about lack of open source is an idiot. We all knew what we were buying.

I use ORCA because its a better slicer so i wont be updating my printers. Its a pain but i knew what i was buying into when i purchased the printers.

I guess they must not have newspapers were you live. Wait till Monday and ask all the TikTok users how their app is working out for them.

@Bambu.

I will not be updating the firmware that remove access for orca slicer to work.

I will also not longer be buying ANYTHING from you until this policy is reversed. I have already cancelled by order for the X1E, AMS, and build plates for it.

I’ve given you over $10,000 over the last 2 years buying printers for family members and myself and this unacceptable. I will also no longer be using maker world in any fashion and have already contacted those i know who use your products and informed them to also not purchase anything else from you.

Get it together.

What made you get the X1E, did you need a heated chamber?

That’s a bit too late as Stratasys lawsuits have been launched and demage has already been done, and whether Stratasys wins or not (chances being more towards the win than loose), what Bambu does now won’t change the lawsuits outcomes. As for not "addressing " the "professional users ", that’s a bit too late as well. The whole shebang of Stratasys coming after Bambu is the fact that Bambu has stepped in Stratasys industrial market share… Anyway, with its latest controversial move, Bambu, under the claim of trying to fix security issues with their cloud (actually, both their business model and their cloud servers have serious issues, but that can wait for another time and place) removes features from our machines, and tightens Bambu’s control over users’ machines , bringing them even tighter within Bambu’s walled and controlled business environment. PRC style.

I couldn’t care less about the “open source” complaints honestly. That is entirely 100% not the problem here. It’s the removal of existing - and needed - direct access to hardware which we own without any other options (aside from not updating). It will 100% cause problems for people. The fact they say they can make it more secure in LAN Only to protect against issues is laughable. LAN mode already has mechanisms around it (password) that would prevent random “trojans” interacting with it. Not sure what trojans attack printers though, missed seeing those around.

I’ll also point out that time and time again (check the blog, news) they have stated they will have an API and SDK - yet instead of getting it done they just throw out all the 3rd Party stuff before doing so? That seems bad faith to me (among other things of late, like zero warning about removing NZ’s ability to buy anything directly thus increasing our parts and such pricing massively).

Too many people conflate “open source” with “open access” it seems. They are not one and the same and one does not require the other.

I didn’t get one, I cancelled the order.
But I was wanting to print some advanced materials and needed the heated chamber and hotter build plate.

And I will not be getting an X1E if this policy stays in place.

Don’t overlook the new Qidi Plus4. It is essentially between the X1C and P1S with respect to price but performs at the X1E only with beefier specs and it runs Orca. The only thing they have not yet released is their version of an AMS but that’s supposed to be at the end of Q1’25.

Wow sorry for everyone here but this was great timing for me – I was about to get an X1E and now I won’t. No local-only control, no purchase.
