P1S “failed” mid print and making terrible noise

Hi everyone,

About 7 hours into a 25 hour print of some war gaming terrain, I heard my printer making this noise from the other room.

Upon inspection, it appeared the build plate had moved to the very top of the a-axis and the nozzle/hotend/print head was hitting the side of the print, causing this noise.

I paused and the print head retracted to the position you see in the beginning of the video, and when I tried to resume the print, it would do exactly what you see in the video.

The printer controls seemed very sluggish at this point and the fans seemed to be going at 100%. After trying to pause and unpause several times, I eventually stopped the print but the printer seemed totally frozen. Had to do a ‘hard reset’ to get it going again.

I then ran a small test print and the printer seemed to work just fine. This has happened one other time though I wasn’t home at the time, but my build plate actually got scratched as well.

Currently have a ticket open, but I know they are busy so I’m reaching out here to see if anyone has any idea what is causing these issues.

I have been using the 0.08mm high quality setting and the only change was lowering my sparse infill density from 15% down to 10%
Filament is Bambu Lab PLA Matte

I’m pretty new to all of this, so it’s possible I’m making a silly mistake. Let me know if any more info would help.

Thanks in advance, everyone!

Difficult to say what the actual root cause was but P1 printers can develop odd issues if there happens to be a read error from the SD card while reading the G-code during printing so I would recommend changing the SD card for future print projects.
Also do a thorough inspection of your nozzle to ensure that it didn’t get bend when the issue occurred and/or while you tried to resume your print.

Thanks for the response @Panamon_Creel
I will pick up a different SD card today and see if that helps going forward. Will check to make sure the nozzle isn’t bent either and report back.

The only other time I’ve seen that happen was during a power glitch, which is consistent with the printer not recovering properly from a power outage. You have every reason to be concerned.

To rule out potential causes, can you confirm that your wall power is stable? By this, I don’t just mean having the printer on a surge protector, but ensuring it’s not on an overloaded circuit.

For example, I know one of my appliances has a significant inrush current that causes a specific LED lamp to dim. Without that visual clue, I might never have noticed it. I have one Dell server with a glitchy power supply that will reboot when plugged into that wall outlet sharing that circuit. On any other circuit it’s fine. My point is, power issues can often go unnoticed, and if your power supply is experiencing line glitches, you may not be aware of it.

The reason for concern is that another possible root cause could be a faulty power supply or bad crimps on the power supply cables. I strongly recommend opening a ticket with Bambu now, especially if the printer is still under warranty, to ensure the issue is documented. If they suspect a power supply or cable problem, they may send a replacement. Both issues are relatively simple to fix—about as straightforward as replacing a hard drive in a computer, involving just a few screws and cables.

There is one thing you may want to check just to see if it is active. See if auto-recover from step loss is enabled. It is in the printer device tab in BS Studio. This is for another problem but it could help.

Thanks for the detailed response @Olias

No, I can’t confirm that the current outlet I’m using is stable, but that definitely could be the issue as my house is old and some of the wiring isn’t up to snuff. It is possible that the current outlet I am using is like yours. I will switch to a different outlet and see if that makes a difference.

Regarding the auto-recover from step loss setting you mentioned. Am I looking for that to be on or off?

I really appreciate all of the help.

Hi! I have the same exact problem :frowning: do Yo have the solution or response of your ticket ? Now allá the prints are failing

I ended up buying a new SD card and have not had any issues since then. I can’t say for sure that’s what the issue was, but it seems to have helped me!
