Painting Depth Control

I made a similar post before, but am getting even “worse” results as of lately. My first few projects painting sunken/engraved text had it going 4 layers deep, so 2 unnecessary filament changes.

My latest design, a little 50mmx50mm heart with two engraved letters, I paint the letters and it won’t do any less than TEN layers deep with the color, so that’s 11 filament changes when I just want 2, and there is no way to change this. This almost triples the print time of this little trinket.

I then tried to load a text-less part and use the text feature in BS, but now it only does 1 layer of color, this is gold on dark blue so 1 layer isn’t enough and you can see the holes between the lines, so I’d need 2…but again, no control over that.

They really should add control over this.

Also, and this might be 100% user error, I am noticed you can’t make color text that is flush with the surface. I am trying every combination of thickness, embedded depth, and part/negative part I can, but when I make it flush by doing 0.16 thickness, (for 2 layers of 0.08), 0 embedded depth, and negative part, the text just disappears and won’t show on the sliced model or in the preview tab so I can paint it. If I paint it and then change it to Negative part, it still disappears after slicing.

Agree with this! It would be super great to have control over how many layers / mm deep the painting goes.

I found you can use modifiers to specify specific bits to be deeper, but that only works on really simple shapes

I have a similar problem here. i try to put some text on an object and under the text i embed a nfc chip for my business card.

On the layer where it should just bridge over the chip/hole the slicer starts to print the text. This happens even if there are 6 layers until the top of the part.
Would be nice if someone has an idea how to fix this. I just painted the top with another color and withouth color it doesnt happen.

The best way to solve some of these problems start in the design itself. Whenever designing something that i know i will want in certain color, i give it a new body or component so it knows that if i change the color, it will only change it relative to that body.

For example, a cube with text embossed. I will make the cube and emboss 0.8mm of text but will say that this text is a new body. If i change the color in the slicer, it will only change those 0.8mm and nothing more.

Some more control in bambu studio would be ok too, but most of the problems come indeed from the design

@Square3D has it right, it’s best to handle at the design level.

There are a few issues that can occur here but usually they can be overcome in bambu studio, if that is your only option

First of all keep in mind there is a height range painting tool, you should use this but since you generally use it on the top or bottom layer you have to account for top and bottom shell layers. I’ve seen this interfere but not sure of the specifics, just that it can be overcome by setting the shell layers equal to the number of color layers you want, not a great solution.

Also, it can be problematic to z align things you add in bambu studio. If your text is 0.16 thick it needs to be placed at z = 0.08. This might be the issue you are experiencing in your second post.

I agree, as much as I wanted to use the slicer text tool since it’s very convenient, I have started to just make the text built into the model as a separate body, you have much more control over it that way. I still use the text tool for one off things I don’t care about how deep the text is or how well it’s aligned etc, though.
