Parametric Model Maker: Allow designer set default imports

Currently, the only way to import an STL or SVG is by providing an option

While this works, it adds a lot of friction for the user. If they want to deboss a logo onto your model (like shown above) they have to download the STL from your page and then upload it.

This might cause confusion. The alternative is to model STL purely in OpenSCAD but this can get complicated quickly for something simple like embossing/debossing.

Suggested feature:

Allow the designer to set a new default STL (or other formats) for their OpenSCAD file. This could link directly to one of their models found here:

Also it doesn’t let me add a tag to the post. Can someone please show me how to add the feature request tag thanks.

OpenScad has the option to import geometry. I am uncertain if it actually works. But if it does, I suspect Bambu could implement this entirely in their wrapper of OpenScad.

If not, they need to combine the objects at the Bambu end which costs engineering time and likely more compute than an integrated option. If so, likely they will push this request upstream to OpenScad so that they can implement it via OpenScad.

I would recommend communicating with the OpenScad project to see if this feature actually works, or asking them if they will consider it should it not.

In case you are unaware, the feature you complain about (rightly) was what we were given after myself (repeatedly) and others asked for what you are now suggesting.

When it arrived and we pointed out this wasn’t even close to the detailed use cases we provided, we were essentially told ‘this is what you get’.

They did understand the problem, or didn’t choose to, they didn’t care when it was pointed out and they haven’t done anything since after being asked multiple times.

The Parametric Model Maker implementation is a good solid tool, that has had no real world updates in a year or more. I think they are fine with improving it. It is unfortunate as there is a list of requirements for it still on the forum I wrote a year or so ago of complied feature requests.

I just had a look at current state of OpenScad development, and they’ve been having some problems getting a stable release out; the last one was 2021 which is far behind nightly in terms of functionality

Basically they have some kind of problem with compatibility and can’t decide how to fix it; the problem seems procedural or political.

I am now certain the best way to proceed here would be to get this feature into OpenScad, then people downsteam of it (like Bambu) could use it more easily.

EDIT This is slightly incorrect, please see a few posts down.

This feature basically already exists in OpenSCAD and Bambu’s Parametric Model Maker so I am not sure why I would need to make a feature request upstream.

In OpenSCAD, instead of importing from “default.stl”, you can provide your own local file path and import any STL / other supported file type that you’d like.

Bambu’s implementation clearly already uses this functionality considering that you can upload a local file that replaces Bambu’s “default.stl” import.

There is a LOT of friction in expecting the user to go ahead and download your model and then upload it just so that they can customise it. I’m simply asking that the designer can pick from their uploaded models to reassign the “default.stl” import that Bambu has preset.

I think the feature is pretty necessary like @MalcTheOracle said. What is the point in uploading parametric models if the file you upload doesn’t even modify your model by default…

You are correct for current versions (which I have checked is dated 2021). I have an older openscad version installed because the new stable doesn’t work with my parametric storage boxes. Nightly does if I click some settings, but it would be weird running a webservice on a nightly build. You would need to pin the version and hope there are no weird bugs.

(EDIT Issue is to with fast rendering, so the program doesn’t take several minutes and then die).

But anyway, yes, Bambu could use current stable. So please ignore my earlier message.
