Park hotend for minimum layer time

Currently in Bambu Studio the only option to enforce minimum layer time is to slow printing speed to the set minimum print speed. However for prints that come to small points the minimum speed can be not slow enough to get proper cooling. So instead, if printing the layer at the minimum print speed will still be less time than the minimum layer time, briefly park the hotend to enforce the minimum layer time. A setting similar to this already exists in Cura, and maybe other slicers.

If you enable “smooth” timelapse it will give you extra time for the layer to cool.

Smooth mode: the tool head will move to the excess chute after each layer is printed and then take a snapshot. Since the melted filament may leak from the nozzle during the process of taking the snapshot, a prime tower is required in this mode. So a prime tower will be automatically generated if there is no prime tower on the build plate. It will reuse the existing prime tower if there is already a prime tower on the plate. In this mode, the toolhead in the video always stays in a fixed position, so the timelapse video looks very smooth.

The downside of this is that it will slow down all layers, not just the top ones.

I second this request. It would make printing thin vertical features much easier. Cura has it and I got much better results with it than with Bambu Studio when printing small parts.

I’ve noticed this on small prints- printing just one will result in something botched, but printing a few on a plate works well. There are a lot of possibilities to resolve, but the issue seems to stem from the previous layer being too hot when the current layer is applied.

Detecting this at slicing is the first step. Something like warning based on a timing or a simple thermal model with material properties and fan speeds might work.

There are several solutions, including park & prime, speed reduction, add more parts to plate, and temperature reduction. I suspect speed & temperature reduction has the most potential, while park & prime might get predictable results immediately. (More on the plate is still more efficient if you have use for the parts)

Found a setting for handling this under the filament cooling.

In other words, this feature (or at least a way to auto slow down just for the layers where it is needed) exists.

Sadly it uses the minimum speed setting as a limit for max time per layer. Ideally it would:

If layer takes long enough, settings have no effect.
Otherwise slow down printing of the layer.
If minimum speed not met by slowdown needed, print at minimum speed and add pause (at purge tower?) after layer.

This is something that is badly needed; I’m trying to print in PHA, and I’ve models with tall, thin elements, these absolutely need additional cooling as PHA needs time to “set” once extruded, otherwise it is malleable and rubbery and just gets pulled down each time.

The slicer seems happy if you set the minimum speed to something very slow, which is fine for these small towers, where warping is not an issue, but might interfere with larger prints where PHA warping is an issue.

if a layer is completed faster than the user-defined minimum layer time, the printer should simply move the toolhead to a parking position, wait for the remaining time, and then continue printing the next layer. The faster the layer is printed, the longer the printer waits at the parking position.

Back in 2021, it was understandable that this wasn’t a priority. But it’s now 2026, and this feature has become increasingly important. It would eliminate the need to slow the print speed down to extremely low values or increase part cooling, which is especially beneficial for engineering materials such as ASA, ABS, PC, PA, and others. In many cases, it would even be preferable to printing multiple copies of the same part just to increase the cooling time between layers.
