Is there a way to change a filament on the AMS Lite mid print?
I’m printing a 5 color object where black is only used on the bottom layers and white is used on the upper layers. I’ve inserted a pause at the layer where the transition occurs, but the option to unload the black filament is greyed out in Bambu Studio and Handy. What do I need to do to allow me to change the filament spool?
I tried that. I cut the filament and pulled it out, then put a new spool in place. But now the option to Load a filament is greyed out. So how do I tell the AMS lite to load the filament?
For your situation you may be able to just set the bottom black and the top white to print as “Black”. Put a pause in after the printer finishes the black layer. Replace the black filament with the white spool. Resume printing. The printer will assume it is printing black when it is actually printing white as it doesn’t check the filament RFID’s while printing. I’ve done this with the regular AMS so I don’t see why it shouldn’t work with the AMS lite.
Thanks. I tried to do exactly what you suggested. I selected the black filament for both the bottom black layers and the upper white layers. When I hit the pause I still did not have the option in Bambu Studio to “unload” the back spool. Therefore I cut the filament and manually pulled out the filament from the feeding tubes and placed the white spool on the empty AMS Lite spool. But now I don’t have a “load” option in Bambu Studio for the AMS Lite to load the white filament.
No, can’t use the “Load/unload” function. You will have to manually remove the Black filament by pushing the yellow button on the AMS 1st stage feeder and then insert the White filament and push it to where the black was in the PTFE tube. If the Black is still loaded in the head you will need to manually activate the filament cutter on the side of the head to remove it.
I did this very thing for a different designer’s model as they didn’t have one that could print all the 5 colours shown in the photo with just a single AMS/AMS lite.
If you read the instructions in the print profile and download it into to Bambu Studio, you will see how I achieved it.
The key thing is to set four colours in the model, doubling up at least one in your case so that the pause lets you swap out.
I also designed a 7-colour model that required it. I made versions for 2 AMS units, 1 AMS unit and no AMS.
And again on this model.
You will find detailed instructions on the process and the specific profiles for each one in the links provided.
