PETG prints suddenly in bad quality

Hello Forum,

suddenly my PETG prints have become very bad.
It looks like over extrusion to me.
I printed fine for months with no issues, and now they are there.
No issues with PLA.
I use the generic PETG profile and dried filament. It happens with different PETG filaments.

For example the overhang test. Black is PLA, White is PETG. Edges are bulky and the backside.
Or the other print. Complete uneven at the lower part of the round part.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

If I had a dollar for every post that is put here saying “I dried my filament thoroughly…”

So you think your filament is dry enough? Did you weigh it before and after? What was the result? If it was less, did you dry it and weigh it again until there was no change in weight?

These are the troubleshooting steps I would try first.

I say that with conviction because the example shown is a typical example of layer separation due to moisture. You could try compensating by boosting the nozzle temp by 20c and seeing if that changes the outcome. If it does, then start looking at the nozzle, the thermal grease around the thermistor as potential culprits in that your nozzle may not be reaching the correct temp. You might also look at your chamber temp and turning off the part cooling altogether.

Olias is right about “drying filament”. Putting a spool in the common dryers and cooking it for 6 hours may even be adding water.

When stating that you dried filament, the best verification is how much did the weight change during drying. With common dryers, at high ambient humidity, they just don’t work - even with the door props that let it exchange air with the surroundings.

But also important, if you are starting with dry filament, a drying session under ideal conditions might not remove much or any additional water. Drying filament is actually a very complex topic with lots of caveats. All of that makes it where any meaningful discussions of drying need to include details since many who think they are drying their filament are actually not drying it and could even be making things worse.

Not in any way saying you dried your filament wrong. Just emphasizing what Olias said about weighing it. It’s the first step to drying filament effectively and eliminating moisture as a possible issue.

I didn’t know that drying is such a complex procedure. I was thinking using a drying box (Sunlu) would do the job.
Thanks for your opinions.
Will try that out.
And again calibration steps from orca slicer.

It does not need to be. Weight is all that is needed to measure the effectivity of your drying method. It really is just that simple.

I ruled out Sunlu after seeing pictures like this:

Recommendations to periodically prop open the lid on their newer models reinforced my decision.

It’s not enough to just heat filament, you need air exchange to move the moisture away from the filament and out of the box.

This exactly. I’m almost ready to post a design for an air dryer that pushes dry air into a filament dryer and moist air out. It speeds drying up, makes filament dry more thoroughly, and provides more consistent drying results that don’t depend on ambient humidity. It makes every day a dry day. It uses silica gel beads in a column with an aquarium pump and is working way better than I had hoped.

Here’s a test/build blog of sorts if interested.

I use a Breville Smart Air Fryer Pro to dry my filament… it’s also a food dehydrator, with convection fan, and can go down to very low temps. Works like a charm! https://a.co/d/idA29eE

I’m guessing your ambient humidity is low. The real limit for the heat/fan filament dryers is the ambient humidity. In humid environments people tend to report more mixed results.

That is one pricy filament dryer… I have been eyeing the new Polymaker dryer and thought it was a heavy premium, and it combines drying with dry storage.

Oh C’mon now!!! But can your dryer make Buffalo wings??? :poultry_leg::grin:

Well, I didn’t buy it FOR filament drying… I bought it as an air fryer and toaster oven… but realized after buying it that it is also a dehydrator
