PLA and PLA Support Printing

As a brand new user doing my first productive prints, I was confused by the support material PLA support settings for Interface layer.

A Dialog box was recommending 0 layers, yet its user configurable. It made sense to print two interface layers as this was thickest most time efficient number. What confuses me is that you would have the choice to have 0 layers.

What is the community opinions on optimal settings?

I personally use 0 layers when I am using water soluble filament. The support material doesnt stick to the pla so ypu should beable to do 0 layers try a small test print.

0 layers with 0 z height distance from model is recommended if using actual support filament. If just using support out of the same material: 0 layers top and bottom and add.02” to your distance from model (e.g. .22)

Thank you for the reply - is this when your support structure is made solely from PLA support - My first PLA Basic prints have used the PLA Basic for the supports and PLA Support as the interface material - again apologies for the very basic questions but I am at the bottom of the learning curve. One other sub question - is the Support for PLA Basic soluble? If so, soluble in cold/warm water or do you need any additives to the dissolving solution? In my ignorance I have just been picking off the support material manually.

Thank you - Its beginning to make more sense - with all your help I need to just get some more builds under my belt and use your recommendations.

The Bambu PLA support filament is not water soluble, but it does peel right off because it doesn’t bond to the PLA basic.

In my response above, the first parameter’s outline is if you are using the PLA support filament and the second is if you’e using the same filament for support as the material that you are using to build your model.

Understood - I will have a play - understand - thanks for the direction

This “barred from posting a new thread because you’re new” is dog you-know-what. Print job REFUSES to load support material even though I have set it. And I don’t see a way to add images. The filament for Support is set to the correct materials and AMS slot. The correct material is set for the correct AMS slots. Yet it ALWAYS chooses and prints the incorrect material. It uses the basic PLA for the object AS the support as well. It’s as if it’s purposely being a POS just to piss me off.

I need EXPLICIT instructions on how to do this…

As a “Basic User” you now have access to post threads and images. It took all of 10 minutes of reading the forum. Not that big of an ask.

I can take a guess at what your issue is.

The filament for support is normally only use for the interface layers where the support tower and model meet. This limits how many filament changes are needed and this really cuts down on the time the model takes to print. You won’t see the support filament being printed on the first lay that you may think it should be.

I want the actual support to be the support material. For instance, the support material color is white in AMS 1. The object to print is green in AMS 2. The support material is also printing green…, but both object AND SUPPORT are printing green. Meaning it’s NOT using the GD filament I am telling it to. SO I SWITCHED the slots and now the OBJECT is the support material and the supports ARE STILL GREEN…WTH

Have you selected the Support filament for use in the “Support/raft base” drop down in Bambu Studio when you sliced the model?

filament

Did you select the slots for the filament you wanted to use when you sent the job to the printer?

AMS Slot

Yup. Been screwing with this since noon (5 hours now)

Can you see the filament changes between the support material and the model material in the G-Code preview in Bambu Studio?

Keep in mind you have to select Support with a check mark. Also as noted above, the “Default” is the selected print filament. If you want a different filament for the support or interface, you tell it there.

After another hour of Print Plate, it started working and pulling the correct color. Ruined the print though, as I forgot key supports trying to get it to to use the right stuff.

The settings for PLA support, especially for the interface layer, can indeed be a bit confusing at first. The option for 0 interface layers is typically there for cases where you want the support to be as minimal as possible, making it easier to remove but at the risk of a less smooth surface on the supported areas.
I’d recommend experimenting with different settings on smaller test prints to see what works best for your needs. Also, checking out resources like L-Lactide, above 99.5%, Reliable Manufacturer in China can provide some great insights into PLA and its properties.
