PLA Basic orange peel

Recently, I have had a problem with PLA Basic between the first and second layer. It is giving an orange peel effect. Since PLA is not typically impacted by things such as humidity, not even sure where to start with this one. I have also tried several different build plates thinking this may be an issue. First layer in all cases look good.

Welcome to the forum.

The second layer prints much faster than the first layer. Your issue indicates to me that there isn’t enough heat being transferred to the filament at the speed that it is printing. Filament that isn’t warm enough will have issues flowing at high speed.

Things I would try:

  • Print at a slower speed (silent mode) - does the issue go away?
  • Print at a higher temperature
  • Check that the thermal paste hasn’t dried out between the nozzle heater and the nozzle. Degraded paste has a direct effect on heat transfer.

@JonRaymond Thank you for the feedback. I will take a look at this and report back. One thing I did try is other filaments. I am seeing this in a variety of PLA, but not seeing it in PETG. So I may need to make some updates to my printing profiles
