PLA-CF: Some filament-spaghetti are hanging out on a floating object

I’m trying to print the stand from:
https://www.printables.com/de/model/426759-lithophane-moon-lamp-with-wavy-stand
in Bambu PLA-CF. I printed it with standard print-settings (0.20 mm Standard @BBL X1C) without brims and without supports.

It worked fine so far (really like the texture of the PLA-CF), but on the part where the wave of the stand is the highest, I got some filament-strings hanging out at the bottom:

Any idea how to prevent this? I would prefer a solution without using supports.

You probably have to adjust the layer height settings and possibly change the angle it’s being printed it. The angle up is too aggressive without supports. But if you print with smaller layer height, you should be able to fix it.

Use the variable height tool and increase the quality, then manually make that area with smaller heights.

Thanks a lot for your reply! If I use the variable height tool, should I leave the “global” layer height at 0.2mm or should I decrease it as well (for example to 0.1mm)?

Yes, that should work, but this is a classic case for using supports. You can paint in a small support area and the filament used and the extra time to print will be minimal.

With supports you could very well print this in Sport mode which might very well print faster than Standard without them.

Thanks for your reply. Would you use the PLA-CF as the support-marerial completly? Or would you use Support-W at least for the interfaces?

I haven’t used PLA-CF yet, but since it’s PLA Support W should work well for the interfaces. I certainly would use it, it was great the two times I have.

EDIT: I’ve also had very good success with the new Tree support setting called Tree Slim. It held perfectly and detached very easily on a filament that is notorious for being hard to detach and scarring. You can see it in the posted picture.

The reason I was asking is that Bambu claims for the PLA-CF:
Bambu PLA-CF is designed to support itself.

So I did a test with a large overhang, left side just PLA-CF, right side with Support-W as interface:

(otherwise the same settings, objects are upside down).

For me it seems that the object printed with Support W is smoother at theremaining surface, also it was very easy to break off the support. For the PLA-CF as interface, I needed a plier to break it off. Okay, I have to admit that I used the “normale” Type printing a huge block as support, so the Tree-Type might be different.

Printing now the stand with a small layer hight and another with Support-W to compare it.

Tree slim actually gives a worse looking layer for large flat surfaces.
If you want to use tree support for large, flat areas, use tree hybrid which adds a few layers of normal support on top of the tree as interface layer.

And special support materials offer the advantage of not requiring a z-gap for support, so they usually give a better surface quality.
Or you can use PETG for PLA, they do not stick to each other.

ANDDD … I learn a new item today. :+1: I hadn’t played with Hybrid yet - looked at it but not printed. Slim Trees work well.

Found an interesting thing last night - Slim Trees do not allow use of an interface filament like Support W, but Heavy Trees do!

Yep, and if you have some PETG on hand the PLA/PETG trick @Thrawn suggested is much cheaper than that Support W. I keep forgetting that one.
