PLA is often prone to breaking when it has moisture in it.

Most likely damp filament. I had a roll of wood PLA that I’d stored in a decent container with some desicant and found it unusable after about 6 months as it just snapped and broke up in short sections.
It’s essential to dry out other types of filament and certainly makes a massive difference to PLA that’s been opened.
And PLA that has never been opened. Almost every spool of PLA I have ever purchased had between 2 and 6 grams of water and some as much as 9 grams.
I’ve started weighing mine before / after drying. I’m just starting to vac bag all my PLA now as well as my other filaments.
