I saw this sign on Makerworld: Legalize Recreational Plutonium - Humor signage by MetaMatter 3D - MakerWorld and I was wondering how to print it. I have Glow filament on the external spool and everything else on the AMS lite. I’m relatively new, but I know there are ways to add pauses in the code to print to a certain layer and manually change color. I have AMS lite, but can’t use Glow filament in it, so is there a way to print the main text in Glow and continue printing the black back part? The white text looks like its the same layer so I’m guessing there’s no way to have the AMS print parts and the external spool (with the Glow) print the other. I figure if possible all the text would just have to be Glow.
You can’t mix (at least currently) AMS with external spool in the same print.
You could use a layer height PAUSE command added to the sliced model on the layer bar (far right).
- Start with black on the external spool
- When your print PAUSES based on the position you carefully placed it in the preview tab (make sure you nail it) swap the filament to glow in the dark
- Resume the print
Done.
You will need to unload the black and load the glow during the PAUSE.
As you are new to this consider shrinking your model width and depth to 25% in each direction (turn off the dimensional lock so you can leave height at 100%.
This way you can perform a quick test to make sure you are comfortable with the process.
Thanks! Hopefully they figure out some way to use abrasive filaments with AMS/lite somehow because it would be a lot easier!
It’s a physical problem, they grind through the PTFE tube and the gears in the respective AMS devices.
They would require a redesign to hardened steel gears and change every point of contact the abrasive material touches to something that will not be worn away.
Did you actually try it?
I successfully printed a mix of Glow and Basic PLA out of the AMSlite. I just had to disable entanglement detection, because the friction of Glow triggers the sensor on the extruder.
For one two occasional prints, I don’t mind it. If i’d be printing such models in high volume the wear and tear is a real thing.
I thought about it figuring one print might not hurt, but decideded it wasn’t worth it. I read that people had a lot of feed issues when they tried it so wasn’t sure.
I wouldn’t either, as BL expressly states they do not support it, your warranty will void if you do and try to suggest wear and tear.
The constant sawing motion isn’t conducive to longevity of the things it rubs against.
That sounds rather pompous, and I wrote it.
I think if the parts were something that were available to replace I might give it a go, but no idea if they are. Not a big enough deal to wreck parts though!
No way I was literally thinking the EXACT same thing!! I’m glad someone else asked the question before I potentially did something stupid
