PLA moisture resistance?

I have made a stand for a model boat that will be left sitting on the dock while the model is sailing. Most of it is Bamboo Basic PLA, and I wondered how it might hold up to being wet (mostly salt water) a lot of the time.

Anyone with experience? Thanks.

The PLA prints I put in the garden were pretty brittle after 12 months. But if it is usually dry with only occasional water exposure and out of direct sunlight, I’d expect the boat stand to last a while.
If in doubt, you can always print a replacement or do it from PETG.

That was my fallback position.

It would only be on the dock while sailing, otherwise inside and dry. And it won’t always be splashed.

Thanks.

In the direct sun for extended periods of time will likely be a bigger problem for you. PLA doesn’t have to get very hot before it starts to get droopy. But PLA will also get brittle as it absorbs moisture. Potentially brittle enough that internal stresses in the print (say, as it heats up in the hot sun) can cause cracking.

For outdoor long term exposure to the elements, you want PETG or ASA.
